Current Sydney Swans pay homage to former players in effort to connect with their AFL history

Nice touch from the present day Swans.
Hand written letters and phone calls from present day players to former Swans stalwarts.
Coaches and staff also involved in the program.

Past players seem chuffed by the initiative, prompted by the move into the new HQ/Training + facility.
Which of course is a far cry from that experienced by the Swans 'pioneers'.

No surprise that it was thought up by Brett Kirk.
In his multifaceted role, Kirk has made sure the present day players, coaches and staff appreciate the humble beginnings the club came from and the sacrifices people like Browning made to keep the club alive and promote the growth of footy north of the Murray River.

“After the 40 year celebration last year it’s good for the club to reflect on the past and to recognise those who have been part of that is fantastic,” Mark Browning says.
Love that the club does this. Think it was a few years ago Dylan Stephens and Chad Warner rang Dale Lewis & Barry Hall respectively to give them their dues and ask for advice.

Lewis & Hall must've been so star-struck.

He was superbly skilled but somehow he always looked (to me) like he had better things to do. That wasn't the case of course, but he just came across as lackadaisical. A bit Fyfe-like in his ability to make hard stuff look effortless.

Dale was a terrific player for us.

Swans talk from On the Couch - will we or won't we make Finals
Thinking about the talk of the Swans being "scarred" from the GF. I don't agree at all. Ours was different to how some other teams have dealt with a hiding. Look at the footage of the whole club, including support staff, standing out there, heads held high, applauding the Cats for their win, despite the hurt, or perhaps to feel the hurt. Rampe's heartfelt speech was not the speech of the vanquished. He was proud, not submissive. The Swans looked like a team who'd lost an important game of footy. They stood proud and took their medicine, acknowledging the better team on the day as good sports but they did not look a defeated team. They just looked like a team that had lost a game, an important game but no more, a speed bump on the road to the ultimate goal of becoming the ultimate team. Besides, the Swans have always been at their best coming off a loss. They rarely lose two in a row. Every team knows to be wary of the Swans after a loss.

The commentators don't seem to grasp how the Swans will grow as a team. They accept that we don't need to be actively trading players as so many of our players are young and improving every year. That's only half the story of organic growth from within. The team itself is also growing and building every year. An entity that is so much more than the sum of its players.

Everyone in the club, from players to coaching staff to trainers are committed to a common journey. Players individually improving every year is as good as trading for better players, even better. The commentators aren't seeing how the team as a whole is growing as relationships are being strengthened, trust is being cemented, shared vision more focused, our game plan better understood until it's ingrained, second nature. What advantage to know exactly what your teammate is going to do, or his knowing you know and vice-versa. A team in true harmony can become almost telepathic, acting like a single organism rather than a jumble of parts and limbs.

What a fantastic environment for young players to develop in or for new players to join. Everyone's on the same page, moving as one, like a flock of starlings weaving patterns in the sky. Even from a team made entirely of champions is still a team of individuals.

Ask yourself, is there any other team of a similar age profile who have had as much experience playing together? For those who have come through the academies that shared experience goes back even further. Players like Gulden and Campbell have played together for more than a decade, indoctrinated in the Swans ethos, the Swans style and have been (unknowingly) part of the Swans master plan since they were boys.

Are we scarred by the GF? Short answer, no. Stung by it, yes. In an interview Mills said, "Ideally, you don't play in a GF to learn from it". Losing isn't ideal, but you can be sure he, Horse and the rest of the team have already banked all the learning from it.

I'm convinced the Swans will finish top four for at least the next five years, possibly more. How many GFs they'll win in that time depends on a lot of things going right on the day, but getting to the big day is the way we give ourselves the chance for glory. We've shown we can do that. Have we improved enough to go that one step further? I expect we'll find we have. Early signs are encouraging.

JPK on SEN this morning with Garry and Tim . Has moved back to Melbourne , looking at a job in the building industry
Downside to this is we will have to fight for his kids against whoever's academy they play for. Likely hawthorn

Yes I forgot that technically his kids qualify for a Victorian academy given their mother is from Argentina.
I just assumed given they will be living in Melbourne they'd qualify for a Victorian academy. Apologies if I'm wrong, I'm not up to speed with their recruitment rules.

He's literally never gotten an open first round pick of ours right. For a so called expert that must drive him up the wall. Every other team he gets it right more often than not. We give him absolutely nothing to the point of it being a running joke between Cal and Kinnear on Trade Radio

Quick look into it and Twomeys phantoms....

2022 Weddle (actual bid, bid, Konstanty)
2021 Brown (Sheldrick)
2020 DGB (Logan)
2019 Flanders (Stephens)
2018 Blakey at 8 (Blakey at 10)
2017 LOB (Ling)
2016 Simpkin, Cox (Florent, Hayward)
2015 Mills at 3 (Mills at 3)

I agree that Twomey must be frustrated at his inability to read the Swans.

Having said that, I still regard him as a decent journo (certainly by AFL standards) & don’t feel any saltiness regarding his view that we’ll miss the 8.

He should have got 2016 right too. We should have selected Simpkin over Ollie.

I'm honestly happy with the Florent selection here.

Simpkin hasn't kicked on and Florent has become a very important member of our team.
