Autopsy Swans vs. Blues R3 2019

Apart from coaching, our players besides our seniors need to lift their level. A lot of them are still playing with preseason intensity. Not good enough.

Jones and Papley combination in the midfield is looking good. Finally some foot speed out of stoppages.
Why besides our seniors? Parker is a senior and he is way down.

Time for some NSW folk to join the umpires then. Any volunteers? Please all feel free to volunteer your kids to join the ranks. :D It probably even pays ok for kids to do the jnr games. Over 15 years we can turn it around.
The AFL will still have a quota of umpires they will take 'from the regions'. I mean there are plenty of very competent umpires in the SANFL and WAFL and I think they have less than 4 each. The umpire department will always be stacked with Victoriana who will always umpire for Victoria sides

Suspecting it might be O'Riordan for McVeigh and the replacement for Hayward is more difficult to predict. The standard decision would be Jack straight in. Rose I wouldn't have much faith in to contribute much at senior level but after his BOG performance he'd have to be in contention. But I can definitely see Rowbottom getting a call up. The club loves him already and it seems like he's been performing really admirably so far.
Trouble is Rowbottom is a natural mid and they will play him HF. With players like him you really have to throw caution to the wind and play him where he is most dangerous.

O'Riordan was stiff to be dropped in the first place IMO. Horse will go Jack for Hayward.
Jack does not kick enough goals and we need a player who can provide two goals, which Hayward is capable of doing. I think you are right but I also believe it would be a retrograde move. We need to look to the future. If Jack comes in he needs to replace someone like Parker.

Sinclair played an excellent game against Gawn last year when he was in the middle of a brilliant year. He's shown he can compete well with Gawn, it's more about how our midfielders compete with Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw for first touch on the ball. Kennedy is in great form but he needs consistent support from Heeney, Parker, Hewett and Papley.
It's very interesting when you look at personal clearances. Joey was a 10 clearance player but now he averages around 7. We don't have any player who averages 10 which is the number given for elite level. I just wonder if Dawson, Rowbottom, Mills, Heeney could become that if given the opportunity.

Agreed. We serve up today's effort against any of another 12 or so teams and we're all dissecting another frustrating loss right now.

Nice to get a win and a few positives regarding individual performances but we're a pretty poor side right now.
There are several sides who we could beat on this effort. But the better sides, you are right, we would be flogged. There are some things that worked. Some did not. We also reverted to that scrappy game we play when we are challenged. It worked but it won't against Pies, GWS, Eagles, Port, Lions etc.

we looked shit v the bulldogs

but its round 3 who knows

we are the slowest team over 3 weeks
Against the Dogs we kept having our momentum taken from us with stupid decisions by the umps, the touched mark off Jones a classic example right when we were coming at them. Two goal turnaround. Melican also had a shocker that night but we are at our worst always in the early rounds of a season so hopefully we can build.

So in theory it should have been easier to beat up a very young Carlton team.

I think we're on par with the teams like Port, Adelaide, Bulldogs, Essendon etc. We'll be very hit and miss this year and hard to get a read of. If we can at least play differently I wouldn't give a shizen about the ladder
How do you get that? Because it is pisding with rain it is easier to beat a side by more? Evidence proves scores are lower on a wet deck than a dry one. So you assumption is blown out of the water. By the way Carlton are not much younger than us and guess who, Port.

I actually think it's the opposite of excuses Kingy. There is no excuse for continuously looking average against a mediocre Bulldogs team, and there's no excuses for continuously looking lousy on your home deck.
That mediocre Bulldogs team beat Hawks who beat Crows who beat us too. Haha

A win is a win. After 3 rounds the ladder only tells us there have been 3 rounds played, not much else. I don't mind a slow build up if we're getting our systems right and improving every week. A lot to like this week, especially forward. Carlton are centre clearance kings so it was an inspired move to tag Cripps with Kennedy. Highlights were our forwards finding better touch, JPK getting back to pre-solo captaincy form before the weight of the world was placed on his shoulders, Heeney shaking off his injury and getting back to super stardom, Jones and Mills getting back to full swing and McCartin continuing where he left off. Reid's touch is improving and his tackling was ferocious. Concerns were Ronke who seems to be struggling to find form, Blakey making too many simple errors and a terrible game for Aliir who played the worst I've seen him. I hope it's a one off for Aliir and Blakey will settle and become a champ. Rampe was huge but big Reg would have helped to steady the ship. Our defence looked undisciplined at times and worries me a bit. The younger guys need to gel and bring their own discipline. They can't rely on the old guard forever. Macca is a huge out. In all though, a lot of things clicking into place.

Loved the desperation and work rate. That was very Swans-like

Of the teams yet to register a win this season, Melbourne and Norf have been the least competitive, and the Dees were flogged last week by the Cats, so there should be no excuse for us not to win next week.

I'm slightly confused by the logic you're using RW. You are assuming that because a team (Melbourne) has underperformed in the first 3 weeks that they will also underperform in the 4th week too and their opponent (Swans) should have no excuse but to win? That conclusion doesn't follow from the antecedents. Teams can certainly improve from past performances.

If Melbourne were to (1) play for >1 quarter like they did in the 2nd against Adelaide; or (2) kick straight when shooting for goal then they would be a hard to beat. The loss of Hayward and the steadying influence of McVeigh cannot be understated and could impact on Swans performance on Thursday night.

I don't think it is fair to assume that any team should be easy to beat as any team on any given day can put forward a really complete performance and win.

I agree. Any team who played us after our 0-6 start in 2017 would probably have been unwise to think they were going to beat us easily.

Gawn will be another proposition altogether, but very happy with Sinkers' game.

Watching the game again, this team could really lift if we got even a little more marking value from our talls. They're serviceable. But if those boys clunked a few more between them every game we'd be an order of magnitude better.

I'm really pumped about what Mccartin and Blakey offer us going forward , though.

Florent should be dropped.

He's the perfect chippety chip replacement for McV if that's what the coaches want. I liked him behind the play when he's played there previously in stints.
Otherwise I agree. Not his worst game this year by any means, but he's not hurting any teams either.

Some thoughts...

So, finally got to see the game this morning... it was ours until the last 10 minutes of the 4th imo, when we fluffed around with for a bit. It wasn't our best effort by a long shot, but it was more structured (I think) than it's been so far this season.

- Heeney... I'm really expecting huge things from here this year and going forward. I loved his game apart from the miss right in front almost!
- Jones loves the middle and thrives there. As heaps on here predicted, I reckon he will blossom this year.
- Kennedy was immense, keeping Cripps under control and still topping 30 himself, still our JPK!
- Parker, very nothing game, wonder if he is carrying an injury or soreness somewhere...
- Sinclair has just been a revelation this last two seasons, if he were five to eight centimetres taller, he'd be world class imo!
- McCartin is really something, I thought he had a really good game in defence. We've really got ourselves a winner with him!
- Aliir had a fairly poor game I thought... is he carrying an injury does anyone know?

Umpiring
I'm at loss to understand it. I saw some really clear holds on both their forwards and ours, not paid. And others that looked minimal paid. Holding the ball, the same deal. They say they have an umpiring review but I can NEVER find it. So I can't learn what they are doing and all I can do is WHINGE!!!

i STILL think we make the eight... :)

Serious question: If Hayward sustains a knock to the head sufficient to crack/fracture his jaw, accidental or not, why was that not head high contact?
