After today's disappointing effort from the boys, its now time to look forward to our next game against Sydney at the SCG. Burton will definetly miss this match and Carey looks a bit sus to me, so those 2 look doubtful at this stage of the week. Stiffy went of late in the 4th with what appeared to be a cramp, and should be available for the game against Swans.

Matthew Bode should be back into the side for the Sydney game. If Carey misses, who do you think will replace him in the side. Do we opt for another tall or do we go for a smaller player. SCG is a small ground and you don't really need a CHF.

Lets hope we get some match ups right for this game and a stupid mistakes from this week are not repeated.

KEY MATCH UPS

Nigel Smart Vs. Barry Hall

Barry Hall will present a huge challenge for our defence. Usually we struggle against big forwards. Last Year Bassett played on Hall and did very well holdoing him down to only 2 goals. I think we better be safe than sorry and play Smart on Hall.

Ben Hart Vs. Michael O'Laughlin

O'Laughlin is a danger player. Lately he hasn't been at his best but he can cut you to pieces in no time. Hart has the size and pace to go with O'Laughlin who has cut us up in the past.

Graham Johncoc k Vs. Nick Davis

Nick Davis is another danger player that can kick a bag of goals in no time. I think Stiffy's pace and Physical approach could trouble Davis and make him a bit more accountable which would hoopefully stop him from kicking goals himself.

Tyson Stenglein Vs. Paul Williams

I see Williams as their best midfielder and as such we need to put our best Tagger on him. Williams' pace might find out Stenglein a bit. Having said that, Stenglein is good at negating dangerous midfielders, and I would back him in to get the better of Williams.

Scott Stevens can turn it on but I think Bassett can take care of him. Sydney look like they rotate their Ruckman through their forward line. I think McGregor would get the job on the likes of Ball and Goodes depending on who is in the forward line at such time. This is another danger game as I think Sydney are pretty good side at home. After a disappointing showing today, I think the boys will want to prove something against Sydney.

Would you drop anyone from today's side??????

Well next week should be a good game....lets hope that todays game will inspire the boys 2 play better next week :)

I think we will have to replace Burton...and Stevens. I think the video will get him come Monday. At the game, and on the replay screen, I'm sure I saw a raised elbow.

Its alright though, as Stiffy_18 says, you can get away with no CHF @ the SCG due to it's postage stamp dimensions. I would bring Welsh and Bode back in to replace Stevo and Burton.

Drop Carey and Perrie in the goal square, surround with crumbers, kick loooong from the centre square and wings, and mop up the goals. Simple formula, worked wonders for the Swans with Capper/Lockett/Hall. Would work better if they had the class of midfielders/on-ballers we have. I reckon when in Rome...etc, just do it with the better cattle we have. Oh, and turn up to play for 4 quarters.

Cheers,

Kasey

Will the Swans be leg weary from thier trip abroad?
Its a must win game this one after our poor performance of yesterday.

We missed Bode and we will miss Burton too.
Doughty must come in for Gallagher.

Hall and Goodes are our main dangers.

Who we play on them is inconsequential if we dont will the centre takeaways.

I think the lads are in for hard yards on the track this week.

Why is this?????? I tought Gallagher tried hard yesterday and used the ball well most of the time. Yes he thumbled on a few occasiona but so did the rest of the team. Doughty had a quite one yesterday for the Panthers. He hasn't earned his recall.

It appears that Bode and Burton will miss this game. IMO Carey is also doubtful, he looked anything but fit yesterday.

Burns had another good game for Magpies and will probably come in for Burton. If this is the case play him as a crumber for god's sake:mad: If Carey misses who comes in for him?????? There was nothing in the Stevens incident

I suppose if Carey must be replaced with a full forward then Schell would be the obvious choice - unless Hentchell is ready? However with Stevens CHF and Perrie FF, I think we're OK for tall forwards. So maybe put in Doughty or Shirley (who I thought did well in the Darwin match) to add to our midfield. Or perhaps Massie - is he ready? - can shore up our defence and allow Smart to pinch-hit up forward. It will be interesting to see the balance next week if Carey, Bode and Burton are all out.

According to Sports Tonight Burton will miss at least a couple of weeks with his ankle. Carey and Bode are doubtful for Sydney game with "slight" hamstring strains and Stenglein and John**** were nursing leg injuries. We might have lost more than just a game yesterday. We cannot afford to lose all of those 5 at the same time.

For arguments sake lets say that Bode, Carey and Burton will definetly not play. We need 2 players to come into the side to replace them. Who Comes in??????

Burns had another good game for Magpies with 26 disposals. Rutten played well for Westies at CHB (19 possesions and 9 marks). Massie was solid for Norwood (16 touches). Doughty was quite for Panthers. Jericho played for westies Reserves and kicked 4 goals. I am not sure how the boys aligned to Eagles played today. Marsh was named in best players for westies.

Welsh, Schuback and Begley are still on the sidelines.

My bet is Burns and Massie come in for Burton and Carey.

Presuming no Bode, Carey or Burton, I would play Riciutto as a roaming CHF and Stevens and Perrie at the goalfront, with Burns in as a crumber in the pocket. CHF is a position usually bypassed at the SCG, and very important to have firepower on the last line.

Doughty, Massie and Burns would be my ins.

Gallagher, Carey and Burton would be my outs.

Without Doughty we will be too small and inexperienced on the wings.

Burns to crumb off of Stevens with Perrie the leading FF.

Massie as a utility for many positions who will have a go.

You're a harsh man macca23. Why does nearly everyone think that Gallagher should be dropped. I thought he didn't do too bad. Why would you drop Gags, macca23?????? What was it that you didn't like about his game??????

If you're small you have to compensate, because overhead marking won't be a feature of your game. Bode does that by ferreting in really hard for the ball. He wins the less than 50% balls.

Gallagher is small, and naturally overhead marking isn't a feature of his game. But he doesn't compensate as Bode does - he plays more as an outside winger, which means he can only fire if the team does, rather than be the one that fires up the team!!

OK, fair point macca23. I think thats one of the aspects of his game he has to work on a bit. He needs to be harder at the ball. He is not soft at all, its just that he needs to be tougher. I also think he needs to be a bit cleaner with his handling at times. For a player of his size he cannot aford to thumble.

I recon if Carey and Burton miss, Burns and Massie will come in,
Hopefully Burns will play out of a forward pocket. Massie just gives that extra in and at the ball espically if Bode doesn't play.

Gallagher will be a bit stiff if he's droped, I thought he did o.k although not his best effort ever.
Mattner will also be lucky to keep his spot as he hasn't realy done all that much in the two games so far.

Smart or Bassett on Hall? I recon they'll go with Bassett

IMO Bassett matches up well on Hall. Also, pretty sure Smart has done a good job on O'Loughlin in the past.

Agree that Gags should get another game. He should be given a chance to settle & with Dogga not having a great game, no reason for a change yet.

Burns seems desperate to play going on his Magpie form, so obvious choice for Burton.

Why is everyone assuming Carey will miss?

Only going by what they said on Ch 7 (I think it was 7) tonight. They said Carey looked almost certain to miss with a minor hamstring strain.

Yeah was going to mention that I recon Smart will get O'loughlin

Carey looked to be carrying some sort of leg injury but not 100% sure

As long as Johnco ck plays I'll be happy

OK, must admit I missed the news. No point risking Carey then. Probably don't need 3 talls on the SCG. May need a backup tall if there is doubt over Stevo, as he didn't look 100% yesterday.

Assuming Carey and Burton are the only unavailables from Saturday's team, I would bring in Doughty, Burns and Massie and drop Mattner for a game or two in the SANFL.

If Stevens goes for some reason I'd bring in Schell at FF and let Perrie do the CHF work, a good exercise for the kid I think.

No need to make panic driven changes though at this stage.

We should towel them up in the ruck and if Clarke puts his glasses on and taps to us we won't have to worry about BBBB Hall and his mates.

Our midfield should see us over the line. But then it should have on Saturday too...

My one live in the flesh game of the minor round this year, so the boys better come here to play!!

Well i'm flying over for this game, so they better fire up after last WE's dismal effort!

Here is my early side for the Swans game assuming that both Carey and Stevens will play:

_ F: _ 19. Mark Stevens _ 22. Ian Perrie _ 5. Ronnie Burns
HF: _ 40. Chris Ladhams _ 32. Mark Ricciuto _ 9. Tyson Edwards
_C: _ 20. Tyson Stenglein _ 26. Mark Bickley _ 21. James Gallagher
HB: _ 15. Jason Torney _ 16. Ken McGregor _ 34. Ben Hart
_ B: _ 7. Nigel Smart _ 8. Nathan Bassett _ 18. Graham John****
1R: _ 4. Matthew Clarke _ 36. Simon Goodwin _ 23. Andrew McLeod

Int: 35. Rhett Biglands _ 2. Wayne Carey _ 39. Martin Mattner _ 33. Brent Reilly

Because you don't really need CHF at SCG, I would play Roo there as a floating forward. Since both Carey and Stevo are a bit sus as far as fitness goes I would rotate them trough FF or FP. Either start Gallagher or Reilly on the wing. Either way I'm not fussed.

Thoughts????

I agree with most of your line-up but I think that for once Biglands should start, he generally is more confindent and plays better when he is given the chance to start on the field...

I like your structure, Stiffy as that is the same way I was heading.

Gallagher is my one concern. I'd prefer Doughty or Massie in the side.

Very happy with the rest of the selections.

Let him go mate. Back him in and show confidence in him. Confident Gallagher = Very Damaging Gallagher.

Doughty hasn't really played well in SANFL. Massie has been solid and might get a recall but it might be for Mattner.
