Symes will be The One

Agreed

Harley is a premiership captain, while Symes is an average HBF player with a questionable disposal when under pressure.
Double agreed.
We haven't given away nor lost too many players, but Harley would be the top of the list whereas Symes would not make the top 5.

Its only been the last 3-4 years where I thought Harley has become a good to now excellent defender. Before that, meh.

There was a bit in the Mail today about Ports rejected players including Harley, Symes & Bode etc becoming good players.
I reckon Symes has the potential to be the best of the lot of 'em.
He'll never replace Basset but he will become a better player than the hound ever was.

What Can I Say... thanks PorT pOwer:thumbsu:

I was hoping in retirement Bass would of been shown a bit of respect by his own supporters. A club man his entire career who didnt try and play on for the money when his time was up. I would love Symes to be as servicable to our club as the hound was.

Every club has had its share of past players going on to do a good job elsewhere

Some ex-Crows were Ingerson, Wellman, McCartney, Modra, Stenglein, Johnson, Mattner & Hudson

They left for varying resons, some of which the Crows were happy about, some turned out not so happy

Serviceable to Melbourne too eh;)

No disrespect to Bass but seviceable summed him up.
I'll miss him.

Never played a game for Melbourne.

Bass played all of his 210 games for Adelaide.

Serviceable players don't win AA selection, TJ.

Bassett was far better than serviceable in his career with us. :thumbsu:

The years before Rutten in hindsight it was laughable that he was our FB. But he battled manfully.

Post Rutten he showed how good he is, and to hear how he had to prepare for each game due to diabetes is an inspiration

He was beaten fairly regularly at FB to my memory, but the fact remains that while he was merely a servicable FB, he was a brilliant third defender, one of the best in the league. At times he probably was the best in the league. If he'd played there his whole career he'd be remembered in the same sort of vein as Hart.

Actually I hold him up there with Hart. Unlike Hart he knew when to retire.

Even the early years you could see he gave his best.

But hey I am a big fan of Ian Perrie for the same reason:p

I never hold "not knowing when to retire" against a person when looking back at their career :p Hart had more consistency, but Bassett was a brilliant player.

Of course, being that I followed my parents to the Crows and he was my mum's favourite player right from the time he debuted, that may have something to do with my fondness for him.

AA selection surprised me! But hey; I wasnt alone in that thinking.
Did he play Melb ressys?

And many more than those realised that he thoroughly deserved his AA selection. :thumbsu:

Bassett would have played for Melbourne's affiliated club in the VFL for a couple of seasons.

He started off on their rookie list and then after being promoted and not playing a game for Melbourne got himself a trade to Adelaide.

The rest is history - he had a great career with us.

You dont seem to know much about Bassett. To suggest he is not a club man because he was rookie listed by Melbourne before jumping at the oppurtunity to come home sums up your arguement. Bassett made it the hard way. He was overlooked by the Power when it chose its original squad ( picked up his younger bro Scott, who although very talented was never as dominant as Nath) after standing a young Warren Tredrea in a Port v Norwood final were Bass gave him a touch up. They chose Daniels instead, one of Ports original stuff ups that doesnt get much of a mention. He was overlooked in that draft and was rookie listed by the Dees, his only chance of getting into the AFL system. By memory he played some great football early on but cracked a sternum and was also diagnosed with diabetes whilst living in Melbourne as a teenager. Bass was very serviceable as a full back, he was only beaten by the gorillas of the league, Sav etc... As a 3rd defender he was superb. Made AA once but was very unlucky to miss out on at least one maybe two other occasions.
Say what you like about Bass but questioning his service to the AFC as a team man is just pathetic. Especially if your arguement is based on the fact he had to start of at Melbourne

Symes isn't a HBF he is a clearance king in the midfield, in the trenches. Shouldn't be played on the HBF.

He is nowhere near good enough at the moment IMO to be permanently in the midfield. I think he will stay in the HBF and rotate a few times a game into the midfield.

Wellman and Sanderson always get caught in my cruet. Two fine players:thumbsu:

Yeah, but Collingwood also fluffed that one up.

And you did get a D. Jarman for Wellman

It's not going to be easy to replace Bassett so that hardly makes him 'serviceable'. Pretty disrespectful really.

I reckon, Bassett was far more than 'serviceable' which we will all find out next year.

Disagree, he played a lot of footy on the wing this year and will do so next year as well.
