No key backs under 24 under contract for next year is bad, no key forwards over 24 is also bad, no rucks under 25 is bad but tolerable in the short term. 7 key position players under contract for next year when the ideal number is probably closer to double that. Good news I guess is that it's still pretty fixable.

The turnover could be as big as 10 between both the senior and rookie lists, which is more than enough ammo with which to balance the list up.

Plenty of talls around both in the system and outside the system with which to bolster the stocks, Including Leuenberger if the club believes that Bellchambers and McKernan are capable of playing forward

What's the better balanced defence?

Hooker, Hurley and Carlisle?

or

Hooker, Hurley and Aaron Francis.

If Francis measures up as expected I'd think the defence with him as 3rd defender stacks up better long term.
I agree but I wouldn't use pick four on someone we intend to play as a third tall defender in the long term. Big fan of Francis up forward though.

Two AA KPDs and the potential of Daniher is probably unmatched. He actually points out that if you add Ryder, Carlisle and a fit Bellchambers it was pretty awesome. It would have peaked next year. Crameri as 3rd tall forward with Daniher and Bellchambers deep would have been awesome.

Dodoro's point is that if we had have had two years of 1st and 2nd round picks spent on the midfield on top of that we'd have a pretty awesome side coming together.

I agree with Dodoro that it's a refresh. A bunch of youth can be added while we improve immediately simply with Watson, Hocking, Myers, Zerrett, Colyer and Bellchambers all being fit and expected improvement of Laverde, Langford, Daniher, Edwards and Fantasia.

On top of that we will probably see the WADA thing go away before the start of the season. Not to mention most likely having a soft draw next year potentially giving us a confidence building start.

Does this make us finalists next year? Probably not. However, nail 2 top ten picks this year, 2 top 20 picks (where we have found Zerrett, Carlisle and Colyer in the past) and once again next year get our first two picks right we're good to go. On top of that I'm sure we're going to get a very good mature mid and 3rd back late in the draft.

That should see us around the fringes of the finals next year (or even doing an Adelaide or West Coast from 2011) and pushing higher beyond that with sustainable growth and then the capacity to top up with FA.

We have to show some balls with delisting and drafting.
Francis is the second best footballer in the draft if he is available get him
Weideman is the best key forward in the draft if he is available get him
Get some more speed and talent in the side eades, Shane yarran are two blokes who spring to mind and lastly be frozen and let it go.....
Steinberg is a vfl player Courtney Dempsey is 28 and is not a difference maker will hams is not as good as Schroeder Polkinghorne coughlan tippa or mcniece kavanagh plodder please make some tough calls

Totally agree with this. We can't persist with guys that are clearly not up to it forever. I really can't understand the hype around Dempsey's play up forward. For me its a case of "yeah he's decent up there and with some work could become a decent forward - but so what given his age and where we are at as a team." Steinberg may be kept just because of our distinct lack of depth for anything resembling talls - i'm probably willing to cop that one. I have no idea why we would even consider keeping Kavanagh. Hams is too small and not talented enough to overcome that at AFL level.

This upcoming draft is probably shaping up to the most important one for Essendon since 2006 (God i hate thinking about that draft - we picked some duds, we got some good players but even the good players didn't work out for various reasons). We will probably have more draft picks than we've had in many years and it will probably shape our future side to a significant degree. Assuming we end up with another top draft pick from Carlisle - i want at least 1 of our top picks used on a midfielder but if there's a good key forward type i don't mind if we use the second pick on them or else i would be just as happy with 2 class midfielders.

So with

Fletcher, Chapman, Winderlich, Carlisle, Melksham and Dalgleish gone from the main list. I assume we will be dropping 2 more (and another if we get multiple picks in trade for Carlisle/Melksham).

Hams and Kavanagh the next to go with Browne the third maybe?

McKernan to upgrade.

Aylett and Steingberg off the rookie list.

Lots of new blood.

You'd boot Steinberg or Pears before Kav.

7 off already. Hams is gone. I'm very reluctant to go with more than 9 list changes, which means drop one of Pears or Steinberg as well. Probably Steiny for me.

Given Stanton and Dempsey could be off as well I don't think we'd be delisting any more until the FA period is over if at all. 5+ live picks is a lot in a shallow draft.

Forgot about Pears, yep he is gone.

Steinberg I didn't count because he is o the rookie list. I counted him gone at the end of my post.

Most likely to have one of Pears or Steiny off.

So it would appear we're finally starting to take shape.

On:

Leuenberger
Bird
ND pick 4
ND pick 5
ND pick 24
ND pick 25
McKernan (upgrade)
McKenna (upgrade)

Off:

Chapman (retired)
Winderlich (retired)
Fletcher (retired)
Carlisle (trade)
Melksham (trade)
Giles (trade)
Dalgleish (delisted)

There's 8 coming in there so one more would need to go, for me it should be O'Brien.

Meaning a reprieve for Pears, Hams, Browne, Kavanagh and Dempsey.

Our next live draft pick is 57 which I would use if we could land a genuine, mature state league KPP ala Brown, Hartley etc. If that occurred is delist Pears. Otherwise I'd pass and leave it at that.

I think it will have to be Steinberg, he needs to be either upgraded or delisted this year

Has it been announced by the club that McKenna is going up? I don't even think they've officially announced McKernan have they?

Either way I'd cut Hams so we can balance the list with another tall and I'd also cut Pears because I reckon he's completely cooked. Like, I'd sooner upgrade Steinberg than keep Pears around. The rest I see enough in to keep around on cheap one year deals and see what happens.

I don't mind taking 57 in as a live pick at all given the club and my own penchant for a smokie, add in someone else in the PSD or delisted free agency and that'd be it I think.
