Team for round 2

Harvey is no longer the most damaging player in the Saints team, Russell has been brought in as a defensive HFF. He will tag Gram. Gram sets up from the backline, breaks lines and has pinpoint disposal. Teams that shut him down will usually fair well against the Saints.

JR was serviceable for the Ants, not the best, not the worst....they might have a run-with role in mind for him. God knows we need some defensive pressure across our HF line to stop teams running the ball out so easily.

Servicable is being pretty generous there Gilly. I would have had Pfieffer in ahead on JR. Nothing he did on Saturday would have convinced me that he earned a spot in the 22. Still, perhaps the MC are giving him another chance to make it in the AFL.

Bentick would have to consider himself very very unlucky not to make it.

C'mon General you were laughing when you typed that surely?

As for Raph Clarke, he is nearly as big a spud as Russell.
So you'd leave someone like Clarke alone after Foley, King, McMahon, etc. ran us off our legs last week?

Clarke was serviceable last week and had 14 possessions with two inside 50s playing as a HBF.

A quick player like Clarke and his brother are usually the type of players who trouble Carlton at Telstra Dome.

Fiora is another quickish tall runner Russell could match up on this week and try to negate.

Why don't people think about the team we're playing and the match ups instead of last week's game?

I'd throw down the gauntlet to Carrazzo after his terrible game last week and have him sacrifice his usual game to tag Harvey this week.

Too tall with not enough mids for rotation - especially considering Judd and Stevo not fully fit.

Looks like a Pagan team on paper.

Not happy Jan
Wow, someone actually looked at the whole team instead of Russell.

Well done.:thumbsu:

As I have said in other threads, I don't think there is enough room for Fisher and Edwards in the same forward line. Very similar players.

Don't be surprised to see Edwards omitted late for Grigg.

BTW, while we are talking about poor disposal (re, Russell vs Jackson debate), Grigg was teribble by foot on Thursday, continually kicking the big up and under, rather than a sharp low stab. This is probably because he is always under the pump by the time his brain decides where to kick the pill.........needs to sharpen up. After a while its not "stagefright" but lack of ability to think quick and act.

After rewatching the game against the Tigers i thought both Jackson and Grigg were great. The composure Grigg showed for a guy who has played a handful of games was excellent, he had confidence in holding the ball until someone presented, he had the confidence and skill to run the ball from defence while under pressure, he may have coughed it up a couple of times, but at least he showed he is willing to challenge.

As for Jackson, he is one played in the team that is a real hard nut, wil lget in and under and fight, his gut running is great and could be our number one tagger.

I thought Bentick would have had a call up, but i guess with no preseason matches he is getting match fit in the 2's which isn't that bad.

Glad to see Edwards keep his spot, i think him, Fev and Fish could cause a lot of trouble with the 3 having great marking ability.

Wow, someone actually looked at the whole team instead of Russell.

Russell would have only been picked as a designated match up, nothing else. His form last week certainly didn't warrant selection, and to be honest, I would have preferred Pfieffer in the team that Russell.

I really do have some major concerns over JR. This has to be his year to stand up.

Geez. JR is getting a belting on here. I actually think he can make it. He looks fitter and bigger/stronger this year. This will give him a lot of confidence. He knows as well as anyone this is his last year to prove himself. I back him in to make it. Lets wait until after the game before we bag this selection. Go JR! And Go blues!! I don't expect a win, but I do expect a tight, ferocious tussle right to the end (this time). :thumbsu:

One tackle on a youtube video will not sway my JR arguement, i could probably find a video of Kade Simpson kicking a goal from a set shot, that does not make him a good set shot for goal though..
Although King did suprise last week he has shown some ticker in previous outings for the Tigers, shown enough that last week wasn't just a fluke, Foley is a reasonable player Mcmahon "potentially" could be anything and played good games for the Dogs in 06.
Raph on the other looks inept he fumbles, skills are average and his decision making dare i say it is very Carltonesque. A visit to the often barren Aints Board will reveal that alot of their supporters agree.
Razz tagging Harvey, not a bad idea, Russell tagging anyone very very bad idea. Half forward, bench or Bullants are JRs 3 best spots.
Love your passion though General, its what brings me back to Big Footy. :thumbsu:

From my memory, Russell always seems to play pretty well against the sainters?? i would say thats why Russell has been brought in to the squad...

Which suggests that this selection is almost certainly a horses for courses selection.

Raph Clarke is either horrendously out of form or as big a dud as there is in the AFL getting a game in the 1sts. Utterly perplexed at how he gets a game at St.Kilda.

The thing with St Kilda is that they have fantastic top end talent. Possibly only Geelong have better. Then they trail off really badly. Some very ordinary players are in there best 22.

crap :p you're as biased against JR as C4. THing people have to remember is that a bloke doesn't have to pick up 30 touches to be serviceable....he chased hard, tackled and applied defensive pressure, exactly the role we are probably bringing him in for this week. As bluefeaver said, Gram would be my target as well.

They'll rotate them off the bench. Fisher will be the 4th or 5th player underdone.

Don't know why the "hard nut" Wiggins is not in the team. We are going to be light, inexperienced and new to worry the Saints.
The ONLY way I think we might have a chance is to try and have leg speed. But don't even have that with Walker missing.

It should be.....
Backs – Carrazzo, O'hAalpin, Jamison,
Half backs – Heath Scotland, Jarrad Waite, Paul Bower
Centreline – Simpson, Chris Judd, Bryce Gibbs
Half forwards – Thornton, Brad Fisher, Nick Stevens
Forwards – Shaun Hampson, Brendan Fevola, Eddie Betts
Followers – Cameron Cloke, Houlahan, Marc Murphy
Interchange: Jordan Bannister, Jake Edwards, Richard Hadley, Wiggins

Emerg: Shaun Grigg, Darren Pfeiffer, Jason Saddington

You guys are amazing. One minute you're bagging everyone for losing and having the wrong side in the next your saying keep the same side so the young guns can get games under their belt.
You want to play the kids to get experience but you also want win.
Don't you understand we are still going to lose heaps of games as we try to get as many games into the young guns possible

Yeh, they dropped one big guy but they still have King, Gardiner and Koshi. (At least a total of over 350 games between them)
We have Hammo, Sentana & Cloke At the most 65 games between them.
You think we should have left out one of our big guys........your kidding!
