No doubt. They were the good years. However that does not mean that it is not working now. The potential to have all your non 22 players playing for a single club has huge benefits! Especially if the coach of the VFL and AFL were able to agree on tactics etc etc. I don't believe we should have one SANFL club, that would seriously derail the SANFL. I support a reserves team independant of the SANFL/VFL/WAFL etc. I don't believe it will happen, however the fact that rich Vic clubs can use this as a possible advantage to ensure all players meet the game plan....well that creates depth that us interstate teams can only dream of (or be very lucky). I would say it would be a few years before a non-Vic club really pushes for a flag......

Success is cyclical. Don't believe the hype that the benefits are that huge. There are also benefits to having our players farmed out to the various SANFL clubs.
Most of the non-Vic clubs are currently in a rebuilding phase, having peaked in the mid-noughties (when the Vic clubs were rebuilding). Give it 2-3 years and Adelaide, West Coast & Freo will all be challenging again. 2-3 years after that and GC will be unbeatable.

Maybe. But it is more than that. Otherwise clubs like Richmond would have been top of the ladder years ago. No the good clubs are investing in everything that can give them the "edge". Be it talking with other sporting bodies, working on different zones, different training mechanisms, different altitude levels, better alignment with their "reserves"....everything. There is no doubt all clubs will be competitive at some point, but that just shows that some clubs have to do it toughter than others. I am not one to cry foul, all I am saying is that unless it is an even playing field....some clubs are gonig to have more advantages than others. This has the potential to be a biggy...

Interestingly Hawthorn talk about what a huge advantage that is, when it comes to developing specific positions. for example, how many guys can play in Ruck for box hill? or FB?
the downside is, that we still haven't been able to develop a decent ruckman from scratch. Rehn aside.

Biglands was a pretty good ruckman that we developed from scratch, but other than that you're right CM.

He was on Port Adelaide rookie (or primary) list for a year or 2 and would have shown some development in that period?
From scratch would be a first year draftee as a 17 or 18 year old. Ala James Craig

Hard to disagree with that, but I don't think Porpy would start in the guts, switch with Dougy. Otten will hopefully force his way back in over the first 4 or 5 rounds, some SANFL time wouldn't hurt, just to get his touch back.After today's news...

With the trouble we have with small quick crumbing forwards we need to get Petrenko into our defense.
After watching match live today, not counting on either Henderson, or Tippett getting back in time. And expecting Martin to be on sidelines. Neither Jacobs or Petrenko have been considered.

Can't see tambling fit enough by Round 1 either is the Sub or plays full game at SANFL, really see the sub as a fresh player being an impact mid providing fresh pair legs to provide best impact. Although could possible see crows using Ruck rotation as the sub. Would be interested to hear any other thoughts on the sub.
Would like to see Otten back across half back after what I saw today swapping with VB and Symes through def wing. Would alternate between thompson/dangerfield/douglas the rest forward to mid.
Would be interested to hear any thoughts on whether Davis should go CHF and bring in Thompson or Talia. Do these provide any better coverage on ground level in backline while also covering mid/tall opponent as haven't seen either play. Then put Mckernan as the Sub.

I wonder whether we will have a defensive half forward flanker who looks after the opposition sweeper. Last year Will Young was used in this roll to cut out Harry O'Brien and Chris Schmidt was used in this roll to play on Sam Gilbert. Yesterday Yarran cut us to pieces because he was allowed to run free. If Hodge plays on the half back line we surely would have to have someone perform this roll.
Vital role i reckon.
Personally I'd give the role to vB, perhaps rotating with Sloane through the middle as well.
