What do the bombers need to do to take the next step and start making an impact again in the AFL ranks.

a) inside midfielder who is not slow and kicks well.
b) off load the middle ages players who arent going to make it.
c) develop our kids, not play duds.
d) trading right

thoughts???

We really need more inside midfielders given that we will probably lose JJ and Pev at the end of the season and we struggle in that area anyway.

If we are to look at trades I would think we should look at trading players such as Lovett as West Coast are in need of his type far more than us. Another area in which we can look at is trading one of our mid-sized flankers as players such as Gumbleton, Neagle, Pears, Daniher and Hooker would be filling the 3rd forward/back roles.

Fergus Watts is clearly the answer to all of those questions. You're a visionary.

think about it mate.
Johns is a dud.
mcphee isnt good enough to hold down a number one forward role CHF or FF.
and none of the fit kids are ready yet.

Think what you want mate.

when need to hold on to the kids. players such as Johns and Laycock are the ones we need to get rid of. the ones that have had their chance but have not really given us anything.

Get rid of Laycock and replace him with who? He was not great last night but he was forced to play mainly as a FF against a top full back. If Hille goes down next year we will have no-one who can take the role of number 1 ruck.

I agree on Johns.

I never suggested that we get rid of any kids.

List has great potential. Just need to wait until the bodies get bigger and then they will go in harder and win more of the ball in the centre and in those 50/50 situations.

i think the list is fairly well balanced with a good mixture of players in all positions. so in terms of future drafting we should simply take the best available regardless of position. in terms of trading not much happens during that period so i wouldn't even think about that. and with gold coast emerging etc all the good players will be holding out for that venture if they are to change clubs.

I agree that the list looks good, just need to work in the gym for a few preseasons to build up the bodies. We remind me of the bulldogs 2-3years ago, with a few more older, but better KPP.

a) tom "sloppy" hislop
b) jj and pev won't be there next year. johns will be kept on the list to cover for mal and fletch
c) we would but gumby, DC, sloppy, myers, jetta, hocking and neagle have all been injured
d) the only thing our team in 3-4 years needs is a key defender. perhaps we could try to trade to get a top 3 pick to get michael hurley

Personally, i wouldn't think of trading Lovett. His game against Carlton and to a lesser extent against the dogs shows why he's just far too valuable to let go. There aren't many players that can run away from every player in the AFL and use it fairly well.

If were gunna improve, we need a ruckman that can win alot of the Hitouts. Hille has been in brilliant form around the ground but his centre bounce stuff isn't the best. If we can get a good tap ruckman in, it would make us a lot more potent in the middle. Laycock simply isn't the answer to the problems. He just looks like he couldnt give a stuff about where his career is going.

Agree with the bulk of posters on this one,

With trading if you give up crap you won't get anything in return. Sure Lovett does some things better than others but for the most part he performs the same role as 7-8 of our players meanwhile West Coast is screaming out for a goal kicking line breaker. A trade in this instance would be beneficial to both parties.

trade him, surely we can get a ruckmen or a draft pick for him. his time at essendon is gone. he has oppurtunities and just hasnt taken them. ok his body hasnt let him. well even more reason for us to get rid of him.

Who else could we trade that hasnt developed as we would of liked.

Why would you trade him for another ruckman ?
Who did you have in mind ?

A gun key defender then a gun midfielder would be priority I would think. Hurley would be a superb get if we could manage to get him.

im not sure. maybe a key defender or a gun midfielder if we included a draft pick. Hurley by the sounds of it seems to be a player. Maybe a young ruckmen that isne getting a chance at their club now. Beau Dowler, Max Baiely. what about them. both at the hawks. not really getting a go. could be a good option as they can both play key position aswell. preferablly Dowler as he is a genuine ruckmen. Thoughts??

your f_____ kidding me arent you?
he is a better ruckmen than that other dud weve got!
he has had a full pre-season and is just getting into it!
If we get rid of a player like Laycock we are going to pay the consequences!

i would prefer to see us pick someone who has played afl before as they are kids and they are all still learning. someone who has been around would be a great benefit to the club. Prismal as i have mentioned before would be a great asset as he is at a Premiership club and his experiences and training would rub off on others. thats all.

Yes hislop and hocking may be the future of our club but they are not going to play solid games week in and week out. thats all.

I think the list is fine. I can't see us finishing higher than 9th-10th, so that's a draft pick around 7-10, and we can pick up a key defender then. I wouldn't mind seeing Andrew Lee getting a few games, to show what he can do.
