I am yet to see his heart is in it. It isn't very hard as a professional athlete to keep your weight down and stop eating meat pies. Yes he can bat (whether that is test quality is another issue though), but he needs to apply himself and get fit. This is an opportunity if he wants it, however I doubt he wants it.
You understand this is cricket right? Do you realise that some of the greatest players we've ever produced we're fatties? I can sight examples like Darren Lehmann, David Boon, Shane Warne, Mark Taylor etc.
The fact is you don't need to be super athletic to be an effective cricketer. If Cricket Australia's current policy on fitness means we're going to miss out on players like that, they need to rethink their priorities.
Maybe Cosgrove doesn't have what it takes to make it as test level but thanks to CA, we will never know.
