I am yet to see his heart is in it. It isn't very hard as a professional athlete to keep your weight down and stop eating meat pies. Yes he can bat (whether that is test quality is another issue though), but he needs to apply himself and get fit. This is an opportunity if he wants it, however I doubt he wants it.

You understand this is cricket right? Do you realise that some of the greatest players we've ever produced we're fatties? I can sight examples like Darren Lehmann, David Boon, Shane Warne, Mark Taylor etc.

The fact is you don't need to be super athletic to be an effective cricketer. If Cricket Australia's current policy on fitness means we're going to miss out on players like that, they need to rethink their priorities.

Maybe Cosgrove doesn't have what it takes to make it as test level but thanks to CA, we will never know.

There is carrying a few extra kgs, then there is Cosgrove.

Your not adding anything to the conversation by pointing out that Cosgrove is a fatty.

He's a proven run scorer. He should have been selected back in 2009 when he was averaging 60 in county cricket. He would have either made runs or failed and at the end of the day, we wouldn't be any worse off than we are at the moment.

I swear people are still stuck in the 90's. We don't have the kind of quality batsmen we used to have. We are in no position to turn away proven run scorers when our current batting line up is this pathetic. Cricket Australia need to reset their priorities to be in line with 2013 and beyond instead of just pretending we're still the number one test side.

The dude is like a bloody whale, nobody is expecting him to be some lean athlete but seriously what does it say about his attitude? Surely anybody that was making runs like him and was actually interested in getting in the Test side with all the openings recently would just hire a nutritionist with a trainer or something to get in semi decent shape.

The bloke is an idiot.

Everybody is very quick to question Cosgroves work ethic based on his weight and I can understand that.

However he's been able to make a lot of runs with his fat ass and shitty work ethic. If nothing else, this suggests he has talent. I for one think talent and runs should take precedence over work ethic and athleticism but that's just me.

I guess some of the people here would prefer to stick with soft ***** we currently have.

Cosgrove is a lard.

You obviously feel that the powers that be are not picking cosgrove solely due to his weight, assuming this is true and is as well known fact in cricket circles then what is the more realistic and achievable scenario?

The powers that be all of a sudden have a change of heart and select a still obese cosgrove?

or

Cosgrove understands he will not be selected for test cricket in his current shape and changes his body?

If your theory is correct then either cosgrove has some undiagnosed medical condition that prevents him from losing weight or he simply isn't willing to lose weight to get a test spot.

If it's the former he has my sympathy, if it's the latter then he does not.

I am not asking him to be Bachelor of the Year! How hard is it in his state to say "I'm going on a diet to drop 15-20 kilos". Heck most of us do that every year after New Years lol! You need to be physically and mentally ready for test cricket and in his shape he isn't.

Looks fit as a fiddle to me

They probably should both be in with Watson out, but that will not happen.

We need the 5th bowling option. If we drop Watson you'd bring in McDonald or Henriques but that would probably require Clarke at 4 and Smith at 5.

Probably just part of his "stop at all stations of the batting order" tour of England :(

It's ridiculous how badly they have managed him yet he has come out of it with a healthy average for such a young player, and actually made some 100s something other batsman cant say for themselves, yet players like Smith no test 100s, khawaja no 100s, and Watson 1 less 100 all get given a place ahead of him.
