I think he was, but not playing a hard tag. Francou from memory still had 20-odd but wasn’t as devastating as he had been in the lead-up.
Played on him at every stoppage, but was told to then run hard offensively once the clearance was won.

Brilliant work by Mick and him who noticed when played them earlier that Francou only ran one way

Sports betting was in its infancy back then. But i recall getting $5.75 the pies head to head at the tab around 5pm on the night of the game. Was always confident port would choke on their dinner. Malthouse was all over choco williams during the week with the mind games. Another thing that stood out - how small the crowd was, port fans had already chalked up the win and were saving it for the home prelim apparently

How accomodating were we then... letting those poor deprived Port supporters access their team a week earlier!

What a night this one was! Will never forget the Benny Johnson tackle!

'94 vs West Coast to this was a long, lloooooong time, but it was amazing to get that win, I can still feel the adrenaline pumping like it was yesterday

Was there, on the outer side, HFF left of screen. I was the only Collingwood fan in the entire bay. A girl told me she hated me.

Highlight of the night was Rupert Betheras having four efforts, against four Port players, to get a ball up.

How good a kick was Ryan Lonie?

I was huddled around my computer with family in a Hong Kong hotel that day trying to get Nick's Game On thread to work. The internet was pretty basic back then. I remember waiting the 24 hrs for the AFL replay to come up and then watching the game in a Wanchai internet cafe. A few weeks later I spent one of the worst days of my life, surrounded by total haters, in a Wanchai hotel watching the GF.
••Actually, I got my Collingwood-Port games mixed up; I was actually in Kuwait that day and I was teaching from memory. The following year I was in HK.

By the look of it you were somehow right in the middle of the port members section.
Yeah Lonie played really well.

Was at the game, one of the best nights ever as a Collingwood supporter.

Grew up in Adelaide and the entirety of my years in high school 1995-1999 we were embarrassing. Not too mention I had to put up with back to back Adelaide flags so it was a tough time to be a young Magpie.

It was our first final since 1994 (when McGuane dropped the mark against West Coast) and it was a pleasure to finally be back there after so many years of dissapointment. We were the obvious outsiders, seemed a big gap between 1st and 4th and no one gave us a chance, which is the best scenario for Collingwood.

Got a nice lead early but the game was a nailbiter, we were just held on all night, Licca and Burns were huge. Pebs and Didak were the difference. I was down the "Johnson" end in the cheer squad and I think I missed the tackle because I had my head in my hands after the Burgoyne mark, couldn't beleive he didnt go back and slot that.

When Leon sealed it I went ballistic as did my family back in Melbourne, was a magical Collingwood moment. Chrisso's call is one of my favorite ever "Davis! he snaps and he goals!...the Magpies are in to the preliminary final!!!" Sweet!

I was lucky enough to get to the prelim as well which was surreal after all those years of pain. We wont talk about the next week but seriously great memories for me.

Yup he needed to though as Burgoyne gave him a bath all night. Was a redemption tackle.

Best ever example of the coaches' mantra - "It may not be your day, but it could be your moment."

Was always confident port would choke on their dinner. Malthouse was all over choco williams during the week with the mind games.

The way I remember it is that all year we had been flat out lying about injuries, always stating someone would be right to play and then making a late change nearly every week. Then a week before this final we come right out and state emphatically that Buckley would not play. This seemed to break Choco's mind as I seem to recall him bringing up Buckley in every press conference and being adamant that he expected Bucks to play. Then we flew Bucks over with the team and Choco really lost it.

You can't properly experience the highs without having been through the lows.

But I am willing to give winning 4 flags in a row a try and see if my theory holds true.
