Not sold on West Coast's draft. Sheed was an obvious choice, but the others seem to be players that few(if any) people were talking about before the draft. It sounds as if we have picked one player that they think is a "sure thing" and three rather speculative selections.

2) None of our pickups were from WA - 2 x Tasmanians and a Victorian.

Best comeback to "you passed on good talent for inferior wa talent" that I've ever seen. :D

I'm talking about the current St Kilda, not the one from a few years ago under Lyon.

Since the inception of the afl st kilda have been a very good side. I've got full confidence we will get back on track very quickly as we always seem to. Do you remember how bad we were early 2000's? We will be fine.

Salem seems like the safer pick to me than a Freeman. If we've found ourselves a quality kick, and a kid who isn't afraid of doing the dirty stuff - I see us as having used it well.

Kennedy-Harris and Kolodjashnij were my preferred at 40 - so pretty happy we got a slider in JKH who fills a need.

Can't complain with what we got.

Scharenberg.....speechless.

May I ask why? Slid about two spots due to his feet, but hardly a bargain at pick 6.

See "Richmond 2004" and "Melbourne 2009".

Funny thing about Melbourne 09 is that it was the early picks we stuffed. Scully walked out, Trengove needs to lift, Gysberts is out of the system, and Tapscott will soon follow unless he pulls the finger out.

However, Gawn at 34 and Fitzpatrick at 50 look like great selections at this point in time.

This Josh Kelly business is rubbish. He only emerged as the consensus #2 pick after we traded it, and the media saying we've lost out on a future Chaz medalist directly contrasts their 'Melbourne can't keep drafting kids without bigger team mates' before the trade and draft period.

GWS were the clear winners. They came away with the best key forward and the best ruckman, in a draft low on talls, and a very good midfielder, plus McCarthy has the potential to be a good AFL player. Most of the players being discussed as bargains will fail to even play 50 AFL games, the club that won the draft is the one that walked away with the top players.

I like Saints draft and Carltons draft. I really like Billings and they cashed in on teams in the teens stupidly overlooking Blake Acres. I guess his poor testing sunk him in the end although teams didn't seem to care about Lennon and others testing poorly. I think Carlton did really solidly with Cripps, Giles and Holman. Got a feeling Cripps is going to end up a star inside player and one the best players from this draft.

The club that one the draft won't be known until 3-5 years from now at least. Even Jack Watts was the next Nick Riewoldt on draft night.

Hawks could be the big winners depending on how Garlett goes.

True if I was referring to freo in this draft. See Duffy last year though. There's been a long history of it happening

There did seem to be a strong connection between what you were saying and Freo, seeing as the line before said "Freo the clear losers"

You still haven't really explained why you think that to be the case, I don't mind if you truly believe we picked up inferior talent, but is that based on the bigfooty drafts and trading board or a wider knowledge?

I still fondly remember when Essendon won the draft in 06.

Don't think a single player remains...

Not if the club had its own way with Jetta being contracted for next yr (surely would have copped the chop before this draft).

Not sure about Bontempelli. Bit of a risk.

Yeah but so was Heppell (for different reasons).

Honestly, if your club has 'mostly' recruited well (and I think the Dogs have), then I have no issue with taking a bit of a risk in search of greater reward.

Not a great deal of premiership sides got there by taking the safest route all the time.

Obvious we didnt rate him as a standout. And also that we're looking for instant inside mids. Too many babies on our list already.
I think in Melbournes position 2 good players is a better result, even if neither is as good as the one they gave up, given the severe lack in the depth of talent on their list. I would have Merlbourne as one of the big winners from this draft, assuming the players taken live up to their reputations. Brisbane seem to have done really well out of their player exodus, from highlights and output of Lewis Taylor I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being one of the best players from this draft, the others all seem very solid too.

Not really a fan to be honest. Hartung is vanilla while Garlett is a risk. They could have had him in the rookie draft.
The term "vanilla" implies ok at everything without being outstanding at anything, this is incorrect as Hartung has outstanding endurance, as evidenced by his draft camp record beep test.
So, maybe vanilla with a chocolate swirl.

Well from our megar pickings am stocked with Crouch. The guy is as hard and tough an inside mid as you could wish for. Ball magnet and is in the best place for him to develop. Would have taken Battersby with our second pick but we will see.
