Gee, you don’t think that has something to do with the Essendon supporters being a bit deluded about the whole thing and signing up to give extra support in a dark time? That whole drug saga did the complete opposite to what you’d expect. Fans didn’t turn away, they supported them even more.

Plus since 2012 Bombers fans have been talking up their list big time. Constantly thinking they’re on the cusp of something.

From 2009 until now Carlton fans have had a lot to disagree with the club about and they’ve been shit since 2014, so hardly surprising we’ve fallen behind other big clubs.

So what you’re saying is Essendon supporters are more passionate about their club than Carlton supporters?

I tend to agree. Deluded isn’t necessary bad, gotta support the club through the thick and thin.

I’m saying that it was something that was able to rally the fans and for a lot of them they seemed to support the club even more than they did before.

In that same period Carlton won one final thanks to a technicality after dumping a favourite son coach in Ratten, and it was obvious to most sane Carlton fans that the list we built wasn’t good enough.

Carlton has been allover the place this decade.

It’s fairly obvious to me at least why Carlton’s membership numbers look different to other big clubs.

Aw, you gotta give credit to passionate Dons fans. The whole #standbyhird and march to the g movement was laughed at by most people but there was such a strong sense of unity by Essendon supporters that you can only admire.

Kicked 10.18 would have beaten your mob easily if we kicked straight not only that but the loss gave the side the kick up the bum they needed to get our season back on track thanks Carlton :thumbsu:
Ah, the old coulda, shoulda, woulda, argument. Essendon shoulda won the 1999 prelim as well but didn't. ( if they did win it, they coulda been sitting on 18 flags top of the heap, but they dont. Thanx bombers)
It's a good game this one, I like it. Who else wants to play coulda, shoulda, woulda ?

But you didn't win, and that kick up the bum is still going to see you finish much lower than last year despite bringing in the three S recruits that were supposed to send you straight into the top four

Fairly certain their first half of the year is what’s causing them to be lower, not the carlton game.

We're in a very dour time right now, there's no escaping that. However I think that we are honestly the first team except maybe Melbourne circa 2013 that has to deal with a complete rebuild. Hawks/Geelong weren't affected by the compromised drafts when they rebuilt in the mid 2000s. It's the hardest it's ever been to build a list, with such a dilution of talent across the league and a lack of real equalisation thanks to a joke of a free agency system.

I was referring to that point he made that apparently losing to us turned their season around, yet they are still going to have a mediocre result.

Well it looks like it has. They were fairly garbage even up to your game. Aren’t they 7 from 9 since?

Their early poor form against Freo, dogs, pies, hawks, us and you is what’s cost them so far. They’ve turned a corner since the carlton game though.

Turned the corner ? Haven't won a finals match for over 5000 days . Any tom, dick, or harry could have built a list to achieve mediocrity. This is what Carlton don't want, hence the full rebuild. Some people will get it some day

Well I think we can be pretty happy that we've turned our fortunes around winning 7 from 9 games. Regardless of how the season finishes we've already seen that Essendon is capable of beating many top 8 calibre sides and stringing together months of good footy. There will be plenty of reason to be optimistic for future years for us.

The best part is Smith, Stringer and Saad are not short term boom or bust prospects. They were all under 25 when we got them. We weren't just thinking about 2018 when we recruited them. They will be important players for us for the next 5+ years at least.

Carlton on the other hand under Bolton. 7 wins, 6 wins now 1 win and not looking likely to add any more. Player retention is going to become an issue for Carlton with that kind of track record. Young players will worry that they aren't being developed well and won't reach their potential (Weitering, SPS). Players in their prime will want to go to more successful clubs in the hunt for a flag. Vague promises of future success with very little to underpin them aren't going to keep the hounds at bay for long. When you're bottom spot by 3 entire games its hard to be optimistic, especially when the other bottom teams like Gold Coast and Brisbane have similar list profiles but just look to be doing a vastly better job of rebuilding.

Obviously talking about this season. They were very poor up until the blues game. 7 from 9 is your season turning the corner

How anyone could interpret that as me referring to anything other than THIS season, is beyond me

Winners are grinners and obviously everyone laying the boots into Carlton at the moment.

four years ago if the bottom side, particularly as bad as Carlton, had 55,000 members they would be being lauded.

Sure the landscape changed now and the big club memberships are staggering but I think it does show Carlton supporters are sticking fat. The better comparison would be to see how Essendon numbers are if they have a run of 3 or 4 wooden spoons like we have. I reckon Hawthorns numbers will drop off once they slide down the ladder.

My best mate is a Richmond supporter (and MCC member ) and believe me I have spent many a day at Richmond games sitting in half-empty stadiums seeing the Tigers getting soundly beaten ... and it wasn't that long ago.

When do you see Essendon pushing for a premiership then ? Me, personally, I see them hanging around 6th and downwards for a long time. THis is mediocrity.

Does this relate to what we are even discussing?

You seem to be getting weirdly defensive over me simply responding to someone saying the reason Essendon will finish “much lower” than last year wasn’t one game.

Its all entwined in the conversation. Not getting defensive at all. Some idiot raised the point that Carlton were pretty much beyond repair, so I merely reminded that poster that Essendon had in fact lost to Blues, and now we have come to this. Happy to drop to conversation, however, I cant sit back and watch the Carlton bashing any longer. Certain posters need to be reminded of who they follow, and where their teams have taken them emotionally.

So it has nothing to do with my posts?

Found this pretty amazing, thought there would be teams from back in the early days of the league that did this.

There are. It's AFL history ie post-1987.

First since Footscray in 1968.
