One of my favorite tri-series was back in 2004 l believe and it was Zimbo's, India and Australia, and the Zimbo's pushed both sides in a few matches and could have won them with a bit of luck.
I enjoyed the Zimbabwe/South Africa/Australia Tri-Series last year. Despite Zimbabwe knocking us off.

had the feel of the top end tours they used to run, and I loved the top end tours

Fox running Kenya's win over Sri Lanka from 03. As much as their advance to the semis was down to the security scares, they were a very tidy side.

Makes you sad thinking about what a waste the last decade has been for them - guys like Otenio and Obuya could seriously play. And Karim was a cracking bowler even at however ridiculously old he was at that stage.

Such a waste that they went downhill so quickly after. add Odoyo, Tikolo and Shah and even Ongondo as their premier seamer to that list and that is a serious lineup. Wonder how they would have gone against the irish side from 2011 World Cup? ( with Johnston and Rankin in it)

Kenya's big problem was their terrible administration and the fact that after the ridiculous circumstances in which Bangladesh were granted test status, the ICC were not going to expand the full members club still further (something we know all about in Irish cricket) and the Kenyans had legitimate expectations that were dashed. Collins Obuya's five wickets v Sri Lanka is one of my favourite moments from that tournament behind Tendulkar's 98 against Pakistan and Bevan's masterclass v England. Uganda had some decent cricketers when they came over to Ireland for the ICC Trophy but seem to have fallen away. It's just unfortunate that cricket is the only major sport I know of that actively wants to be smaller and to contract rather than expand.

There seems to be a concerted push from the cricket media to make the case for the associates during the World Cup.

You can barely read an article on Cricinfo without their plight being either mentioned or in focus. Many media outlets have had a cricket writer make the case for them too. Even the commentators for the World Cup, hired on behalf of the ICC, have been making the point.

It's fantastic.

Plus the hosts of the next world cup are the only nation that have produced a truly horrible performance so far

The Cricinfo pieces on Afghanistan in this WC have been terrific in particular.

Been thoroughly impressed with some of the Afghans ability to at least have a crack. Bangladesh are playing to there strengths and Ireland seem to have a squad capable of pushing some higher ranked teams.

Havent been able to catch the Scots or UAE (yet) but look forward to the chance
UAE lacks bowlers, but have some good sloggers.

Looking forward to catching Afghanistan when they come here to Perth. What a success story they have been...really enjoyed the articles at Cricinfo...even if that site has degenerated into a total abortion. Anyone else hate its new look?

Ah okay. Didn't realise Scotland/Netherlands could sign overseas players in the county comp.

They can as they compete as if they were a county. Ireland had Saqlain, Afridi and Jesse Ryder, none of whom were a success. Scotland even manged to sign Dravid with help from the Indian community there.

How close do we think Ireland are to Full member status
India and Australia will never allow it. I hink we need to see more evidence of the next group of players to show there is a produciton line, but other than that they shouold be getting regular ODIs and FC games against full professionals. Personally, I would have them playing Tests and as a Full Member in the next 3-5 years if that can be done and results hold up. They would be a good chance of beatong Zimbabwe and West Indies over five days occasionally now, if they had more FC experience.

And Afghanistan are not far behind, if some way can be found to continue to produce players with the nation itself the horror show that it will be for decades to come. Both need to prove they don't just have a one-off generation like Kenya had.

edit: It certainly won't hppen before 2019 Th ICC (read CA, ECB and BCCI) don't want to draw the extra criticism having 11 or 12 full members and a 10 team WC would bring.
