Trouble is , as in Geary we don't see the full picture of these guys and their leadership skills at the club.

Jack Steele is an automatic inclusion every week, but i don't know if he's a good leader.

Of those that are automatic selections each week.
Gresham or Billings , may not have the leadership qualities.
Membrey, -- I don't know anything about his leadership qualities, only his taste in tattoo's.
Butler or Wilkie or Howard - Maybe but early days so far, he needs to have prove himself a bit longer.
Carlisle - thanks to his little social media effort, i don't think we can do this.
Hannebery too old and creaky.

Could be Wilkie. Seems confident, well-spoken and is a pretty fierce competitor. Doesn’t like to be beaten and is a very solid and consistent performer. Good age. Might need this season and next though to get enough AFL experience.

Only problem here is that we don’t know what he’s like with other players ie is he actually a leader?

The captain does not necessarily have to verbally motivate the rest of the team to be a good captain. He should show the way by example with his on field performances. Geary is very brave and has the respect of his teammates, but IMHO the captain should be capable of willing the team over the line by his performance. The main reason that usually the best players get elected as captains is that their performances underpin their leadership.

Look at what Nick Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes did for our club, they were ruthless competitors but they were also highly skilled footballers. Actions speak louder than words and we seriously need our talented younger blokes to have an opportunity to emerge as true leaders and drag the football club along with them.

I would love for Billings to be it and chuck him in the middle rather than on a wing. I really do believe his contested footy has improved and he could really thrive if we fully backed him with this.

I was talking to a mate who follows Richmond and is mates with Butler's godfather. He reckons that Butler should play wing. Says he's too creative to play pocket and adds some zip and distribution. Could move Billings inside or to the forward line and try Butler as a wingman.

Nah move Hill to the emergency list.

Ratts to channel Clarko and use Ross as a Richie Vandenberg stop gap captain for a year or two. Not good enough for the 22? Who cares.

Richie V was a battler but he had ticker...

His smile is so big he doesn't need to say much, everyone will love him anyway😍
The thing is our captain is very well respected and try's 100% , but it would have to be his last season.
Time to blood a Captain and the way Billings is going I would give him the reins , the guy has come out of his shell and basically has been our only performer in every game this year.

Grant Thomas had it right. Give a wide number of players the opportunity to lead, allow them to learn on the job and then create other leaders.

Result? 2009 GF team had Riewoldt, Hayes, Kosi and Ball who had all been captain as some stage, as well as other leaders such as Montagna, Goddard, Fisher and Dal Santo.

I would suggest a wider leadership group including Long, Battle, Ross, Jones, King, Wilkie & Steele with Geary and Hanners as elder statesmen.

I agree. I think it can become too easy for players to sit back and leave it all to the current captain.
Change it around. Give it to Wilkie for a year , then Billings then Clark. Might be the best way to develop new leaders.

Geary to be fair is still the best back pocket we have , but at 32 and just really a average player he is taking young players position who could become more value to the team.

I agree that he's still best 22 for the lockdown role he can (and consistently does) perform.

Our leadership group is a dog's breakfast though. Robbo not even playing seniors, and Hill in the leadership group?

Personally I think we should give the captaincy to Billings, looking at how much he has grown as a player and media performer; still with scope to improve on both. That goal against Carlton in the third when the run of play had been against us for quite a while - that's what a captain does.

Was the captain of North Adelaide in the SANFL and led them to a premiership. Has leadership written all over him.
