The Beep Test

I think Tim Clarke from Hawthorn got to Level 21 in the Beep Test late last month, not sure if he had passed it or not! (Herald Sun) Also to do the last 100m of the beep test, how have to do it in 18-20 seconds after a 5000m run.

Mottram basically sprints the last 400 after a 5000 meter event, dont know why it's so hard to belive, these bloke's are freaks!

following on (results http://afl.com.au/InternationalCupNews/News/NewsArticle/tabid/208/Default.aspx?newsId=55011)

these are the min stds for umpires in the AFL

Field umpires must run 4km in a time of 14:35mins or better, 5 x 1km at an average of 3:25 mins or better per 1km with a 6min break in between each 1km run, and 10 x 80m at an average of 13 seconds or better with 25 seconds recovery between each 80m sprint.

Boundary umpires must run 10km in 39:00 mins or better, 4km in 14:10mins or better, and 5 x 1km at an average of 3:25mins or better with a 3 minute recovery between each 1km.

Goal umpires must run 4km in a time of 18:30 mins or better, must obtain Level 10 or higher in the beep test and average a time of 25 seconds or better over 3 runs in an agility test.

**** me those first 2 are high levels.

dont see why goal umps should have to pas anything though??

Wowser - runners doing sub13 on the Tan track are a dime a dozen. Shit, I'm one of them and clearly Hairy Cat Mooney is another. But what most of these guys clearly AREN'T carrying around the track is 80 odd kilo of muscle and a football for a few seconds at a time.

No one's doubting the small handful of AFL players who have world-class aerobic endurance (such as those you've mentioned and more), but when you've got 16-17 year olds who've gone under 12 minutes, you need to be a bit more informed with who you'd back in a foot race.

So...hang on a second...you are saying there are 16-17 yo's doing the tan (3.83k) in under 12 minutes?
This equates to doing the Adelaide City to Bay (SA 12 k race) in 37 odd minutes, thus putting them in the top 10, against guys who are competing to represent the country in such events.

And for the record, the top 10 (at least) are far from amateur in terms of running

No...its you (and Mooney) who needs to be a bit more informed mate.

Runners doing sub 13 'tans' ARE NOT a dime a dozen I am sorry.

There is so much BS on here its hard to see!

Yup, but mind you these are the cream of the crop - guys who are world junior champ reps pushing for bigger things. You can count them on one hand, but they're doing it. You've got over 40's doing it too, and in 2006 nearly 20% of runners at the Aths Vic tan relays cracked 13 minutes (me = in top 1/2 of page 3).

If the link actually works, check it out. #13, 14 & 24, whilst competing as overage athletes were U18 (#24 may still be) when racing, plus the two who got in under 12 and raced as U18. Call me ill-informed, but look at the stats. As someone involved with athletics, 13 minutes around the tan is meh. As someone who isn't, such as yourself, 13 minutes is far more significant. 8 figure sums of money are monstrous to me, but jack shit to the finance workers and bean counters here.

It's all about perspectives Wowser, chill out:cool:

Only  I think you've convinced me there definately is different versions of the beep test...

There are clearly different versions and also there are alot of chinese whispers regarding elite athletes scores etc.... i was at the state screening for the draft camp 4 years ago and i'm not going to say my score cause everyone on this thread would say im lying but no-one dropped out before 12 and they went well into 17's at the death.

There are different versions when i was in year 8/year 9 i was superfit and got around 11 and i had a friend from a different school and he got 10 something and i played footy with him and there is no way he could get 10 on the test i did.

I think you need to realise that if you run the tan in under 12 minutes, it doesn't mean that you'd be able to run the Adelaide City to Bay in 37 minutes.

To finish the official beep test you would have to run 5580 m.

It's actually 4940m and even if you do the American measurements is 4940 yards, which is roughly 4969m.

So many people are telling lies in this thread its not funny, getting anything over 15 is a lie unless you are a cross country running, or long distance swimmer/cycler etc or play Afl or A-leauge or something like that

My mate get 15.4 on the beep test at footy training last week and the top was 16.2 or 16.4

The last time I did the beep test was in year 10 at school (I'm 22 now, so it was a while ago!) and I got just under 9 I think. Should be able to get over 10 now.

My little brother did the test. He got 9.3 and is 12 years old. This good, bad or what?

about average for his age. Im have always believed with the beep test that

under 10's - not to good

11 - 12 - pretty good

13-14 - quite fit

14.5 + - pretty rare

this is of course varies depending on the age though

Actaully that's good for his age. We have the "what you should get" lists for the beep test and other tests for your age and for a 14 year old, I'm sure you will as shocked to know as I was that the "good" range was something like 7-8 or 8-9 or something around that.

On the video? When they mentioned his Vo2 Max. That's what the beep test... well...tests.
Our PE class went to UQ last week to test a few kid's Vo2 max's. They put them on a treadmil and made them run with incresing speed and incline. He was wearing a face mask which meausred how much oxygen he was breathing out. One kid ran to about 14 kms and 4% incline and was screwed, but our schools cross country champ was stopped at 20 kms and 6% incline.

This is the only true way to measure your Vo2 Max, but a beep test can give you an idea.
