No the Bulldogs wouldn’t because you still have the point4 would get pushed back to about 14-15.
No issue with a 20% discount it’s the trading of rubbish picks to get top players that’s the problem.

You still get pushed down because other clubs with poor picks who trade leap frog you to the pick the club with the FS previously had. If the Bulldogs first pick was wiped out the Lions would’ve had access to Jacob Van Rooyen and everyone in the 20’s would’ve moved up a pick.

So still have points didn't you originally say 2 firsts, or was that the other poster. Someone also mentioned removing discount.

Yep got you on that other point I guess moving down 1 pick is list breaking in the 20s.

Still have discounts and points but you have to actually get those points from the round the bid is made, or perhaps with bids say close to the end of the first/second/third round the points can come from say 10-15 draft spots down the order or atleast the vast majority of them. Perhaps even as I’ve seen mentioned before have a maximum 2 draft picks to match a bid and if that means that that eats into the next seasons top picks or from the same round then so be it.

I'd make it so the first pick has to be within 10 spots of the bid. Every blind donkey knows when these bids are coming on the top tier. So for instance the Bulldogs this year (and before you Dogs fans jump down my throat it's just an example) would have to trade for a pick inside the top 12 to have access to Darcy, otherwise he's available for the draft. Similar Daicos would have needed a pick within the top 14. It means that these top talents clubs aren't matching with scrap 20's picks. We all know the second round is too highly scaled.

Broken

1. having been broken.
"he had a broken arm"

2. (of a person) having given up all hope; despairing.
"he went to his grave a broken man"

3. AFL Bidding System
"Wait, you can match bid at Pick 2 for Darcy and 33 for Owens, but not 27 for Motlop? Man, this is so ****ing broken"

I think the discount should stay (maybe not 20%). Not sure the first pick within ten spots of the bid is workable to be honest.

I’d suggest that you can only use picks within two rounds to match, so if the bid comes in round one of the draft you can only use picks from round one or two to match the bid. It means clubs can be more able to have the required selections ready pre draft (while guessing an exact bid spot is tricky getting the round right should be possible). Also should mean teams with two or more selections can manage to get it done and should make the perceived payment for the players fairer.

Drastically reducing the value of picks in rounds three and four would have the same effect but that would require the AFL to admit they made a mistake so I don’t see it happening.
