Not to beat a dead horse, but I was responding to the specific claim that Newnes would outshine the younger alternatives when playing at their level, a claim that is demonstrably false across a number of VFL games this year - irrespective of the other reasons you've outlined that may otherwise justify his inclusion in the 1s.

Claim isn't false at all. Review Newnes's numbers when he was in the VFL, rewatch the games

What a bust he’s proven to be AND he is on big money. Total Bust.
Not sure where he fits in the forwardline if Charlie is fit tbh.

Betts Harry Silvagni
Owies Charlie Martin

Suppose he could rotate via the bench or if Martin goes up field for a change up and things like that.

If McGovern is fit he is easily on our forward 6. It’s just a question of remaining on thebpark

hmmm - if McGovern remains fit I think he replaces JSOS. Although that's a hard call for me to make tbh as I have a lot of time for JSOS.

Tough decision really, JSOS tenacity is admirable and he's far from being a superstar, but golly gee he gives it his all.

He can fix that horrible goal kicking and kick 15-20 per season, EASILY slides in front of Mcgov, not even close.

Why do you think he's in front of JSOS?

Averages 2 shots on goal, yet only 0.6 goals per game. If he can turn that into 20+ a season he can solidify that spot as our 3rd tall up forward, and McGovern plays as an intercepting defender (which can also free Stocker up into the midfield).

Because McGovern is a more talented footballer. He, like his brother, can pull down marks when others cant. He reads the flight ball really well. I see him clunking marks between the wing and our 50m arc, which sets up for better penetration beyond our attacking 50m. Unfortunately injuries and approach to fitness may not see him reach his full potential. That said, if JSOS holds his position then I wont be complaining, as I rate McG highly it would mean JSOS has surpassed him.

What has McGovern done to make you think he'd be a good defender? I can't see it.

I'd love to see Stocker in the midfield, good god seeing him light it up this year has been special albeit in the backline, that mongrel too. :thumbsu:

Nothing, but it's not like we're going to be paying a $700k+ guy to play in the 2s. Right now it's between JSOS and Gov for our 3rd tall forward spot, and if it's not Mitch then we better start working on his defensive craft.

Where does he fit in defence? Shifting him back there doesn't solve anything either. I'd rather be playing Plowman & Parks than McGovern in the back 6, and eventually Marchbank.

Anyone could take the spot of Martin at the moment.

Plus all it takes is an injury to open a door and then there is a spot, just how others have taken Mitch's spot.

The guy is still on the list. He's being given every chance to make it back. He'll be backed in until he isn't. Once that happens, only then can it be said he's a "total bust" and that it is "proven". Until then, what Percy said is "total bullshit".
He’s been on the list for 3 years on big money, he’s either been injured, unfit or out of form. Would love to be proven wrong but he is the definition of a bust

JSOS ahead of Gov for me.

Potential McGovern might well be ahead of Potential JSOS, but at this point Real JSOS is way ahead of Real McGovern.
I don't think real JSOS is way ahead if anyone. JSOS is also an average player. Shows good signs here or there but in reality doesnt do enough to be a clear best 3rd tall.

Even last week when he had a much lauded game, he was good early and late and did not much in between.

Gov vs SOS.

I reckon Gov gets him athletically. More dynamic. Faster, stronger, higher leap, better mark, better kick (especially at goal). More x-factor.

SOS wins on workrate, heart, guts and probably endurance.

Both are smart footballers so I'd say 'smarts' is a wash.

Neither will take a backward step and both will fly the flag and backup teammates.

What they offer is slightly different, even if the play the same position.

It really depends on what the MC are after on any given week probably to with fitness and form.

I'd say MC would be picking Gov if given a choice.

If he was fit to play and wasn't cutting it, i'd agree but he's not. Charlie's also on big money and injured alot.

Very frustrating for everyone (except the opposition). Imagine if we could get both on the park fit and firing.

You'd want Parks over Gov in defense?

The way I prefer our back 7 looking is Weiters and Jones as the talls, Plowman and McGovern as our medium sized lockdown or intercepting defenders, and Saad/Doc/Newman as our smalls (one of them a winger).

The thing is, if JSOS is our 3rd tall up forward and we can't find a spot for Gov in defense, then it's a big waste of $700k+

Oh lordy
Massive slip up/faux-pas from Jordan Lewis on 360.
