Well considering we all play each other once and there's only 5 games that are different variables across the board. I would say the ladder is about 80% accurate. Which I'd take over the opinion of the average punter.

There are enough rounds with enough variables to make that effect minimal anyway. The ladder is usually damn accurate by end of season.

Ground ball gets in d50 is the stat I think. Pretty much the best “mop up” defender. Seems we’ve been struggling at that this year too. Lots of players scoring goals against us from stoppages inside d50. I think Williams would be the player that covers for that but he can have a lot more brain farts defensively. Hits the oppo hard offensively though which Samo doesn’t do as much. Wouldn’t mind seeing samo get a tagging role. It’ll improve his running and I reckon he’ll make players work super hard at stoppages. But hey what do I know.

That was great, nice work with the interview. LP really presents himself well. I really liked his comments about being a nice guy off the field and a ruthless competitor on it. The strategy with the guys playing 2s currently makes sense too, but looking forward to them letting LOB loose in the seniors very soon!

People like Percy fail to reconcile the link between the salary cap breaches/out spending everyone else and success.

What link? We weren't particularly successful during the salary cap breach period ...

Bloke's like Perc are harking back to the seriously successful period of the late 60's through to the early/mid 80's when a) there wasn't a salary cap, and b) our team was mostly made up of recruits that were in our zone, there were very few high-priced recruits. It was more good luck than good management.

It was really only the Bradley/Kernahan/Motley coup that started the whole cheque book recruiting narrative, and looking back, it signalled the start of the downfall of the club.

You have the era of 65 - 84, 6 flags in 20 years, followed by the era of 85 - 02, 2 flags in 18 years - both of which came in the first 10 years. Then the salary cap penalties and mediocrity ever since; interrupted only by a brief blip around 2010.

There was a reason we got rid of all the people in charge during the successful period. It is because the F'd the club.

I think the move away from Princes Park has had as much to do with our fall as anything else (and given that it was a direct result of the salary cap penalties, you can't really separate the two). Princes Park was a fortress for the club in it's most successful times and it guaranteed a level of financial security that would have been the envy of most other clubs.

You have to wonder where we'd be now if we still had such a strong home venue. The only other Victorian club that has anything approaching what we had, is Geelong, and look at what it's meant for them.

Collins literally sold the soul of the Carlton Footbal Club, just to appease his masters at AFL HQ, and we haven't had one since.

Also LP's words suggest to me they know they've too many nice guys and need to 'give permission' to more of them to go harder on field.
