What went down ?
J.L said something like...
"Sam (Mitchell) will pull him off"
Silence....
then
"...the ground"....
Awkward silence followed by faint s******s all around and proceeded by others pulling J.L out of massive hole by changing subject and talking quickly.
Oops.

You'd want Parks over Gov in defense?

The way I prefer our back 7 looking is Weiters and Jones as the talls, Plowman and McGovern as our medium sized lockdown or intercepting defenders, and Saad/Doc/Newman as our smalls (one of them a winger).

The thing is, if JSOS is our 3rd tall up forward and we can't find a spot for Gov in defense, then it's a big waste of $700k+
Does Mcgoverns contract expire next year??

Nice edit there ;)

The guy is still on the list. He's being given every chance to make it back. He'll be backed in until he isn't. Once that happens, only then can it be said he's a "total bust" and that it is "proven". Until then, what Percy said is "total bullshit".

McGovern hasn’t been worth half the salary paid to him.

SOS vs GOV is a moot discussion.
I know SOS has had his injuries, but I think we all agree GOV is less reliable in terms of being fit and playing games.
I think GOV could end up down back because I suspect he would read the ball well and we know he can mark it, issue is we already have a lot of defenders.

In the last 3 years since Gov has been at the club he's actually played 1 more game than Jack in the same period.

I'm still not sure they're directly competing for the exact same position. for mine, Gov is a 3rd tall while Jack is more of a 4th/flanker who can pinch hit in the middle or be a body to throw in as relief ruck. He can kind of play tall but it's not really his strength.

That 4th/flanker role could get split between Martin & Jack, if Martin can spend some more time in the middle, while Jack can also do the classic utility role stuff, filing in for a few minutes as a taller target, tagging a big-bodied mid, etc. Jack is a great 22nd man (or sub) through his versatility; flank/mid/quasi-tall/quasi-pressure fwd/inside mid/quasi-relief ruck/big inside mid tagger...

I think the role for Jack is one like Tom Lynch. He has games or periods where he does find the ball a few times up on the wing and is a good linkman as he's a good flat kick. Much better field kick that for goal. He's also occasionally taken contest marks in that area of the ground.

Unfortunately it seems like we'll never have a fully fit forward line to pick from so I think the argument of JSOS vs McG is probably not worthwhile.

If we ever had Charlie, Mitch, JSOS, Fish, Cuningham and Martin available to pick from at the same time it would be a wonderful dilemma, but unfortunately all have had their issues getting on the park.

Both have swing man ability too, Sosos with the added bonus he can tag the big bodied mids, where his pace is not so exposed.
McGov has tantalised us all,
McGovern hasn’t been worth half the salary paid to him.
Not yet. But he's still on the list, so hope springs eternal until he's cut.

I guess you would have turfed Dow before the last week or two.

yeah, it's a bit like that. I'm not sure he's the same level of runner as Crows Lynch, but he certainly does alright in that kind of role. He kicked better last week, so maybe if he keeps doing that extra hour of goal kicking practice before games he'll keep improving and actually be reliable in front of goals

No. I did not turf Dow.

2 years of it left; contract expires in 2023.

Question becomes: while he might be getting on average 700-800 a season, SOS liked to frontload things, and at the time we got him we only had Cripps, Charlie on decent coin IIRC, and we hadn't entered the period of paying 105% of the cap. So, theoretically, we could already have paid him 1.3 million over the first 2 seasons, leaving us paying 466 thousand a year for the next three; that's only about 40 thousand above the AFL median wage.

Sure, it's a waste, but so too was all the salary dumps we got in since 2015; the money has to go somewhere to pay 95% of the cap. If we're in the situation that he can still come good - and I don't have high hopes, actually - then he's got time to make that initial payout worthwhile; if not, he's not getting paid absurd amounts now, and we're only two seasons at just above median wage and he's not preventing us going for other players.

Peak McGovern is dynamic and improves our forward line and connection through the arcs. But we haven’t seen peak McGovern in more than a couple of quarters. I was not in favour of his recruitment, believing that JSOS and at the time Pat Kerr were going to capably fill the position he was traded in for. Also did not believe he was worth anywhere near the money. One reason I am off the Teague Train is DT’s stubborn support of his mate, who was stubbornly selected while living the high life with his big pay cheque and not doing the work to condition his body for maximum performance, let alone to simply handle the rigours of an AFL footy season.

Those hanging on to hopes of him justifying his salary are supreme optimists. It is not impossible, but highly unlikely. Both Jack Silvagni and potentially Brodie Kemp can provide a similar or greater output as third tall forwards. It is also likely that one Patrick Cripps will play more forward as our young midfielders develop.

I can’t help but see McGovern as potential trade collateral either for Cerra, if feasible, or for a decent forward/ruck. Story on AFL site regarding a potential Victorian move for Rory Lobb for instance. This poster sees the need for a solid, mature forward/ruck to complement TDK as an equal priority to acquiring a KPD successor to Jones in the upcoming trade/draft period. I like Pittonet, but TDK and a forward threat back up would be spectacular in coming years.

Not overly enamoured with Lobb over a couple of other options I could name, but looking like Taberner and young Treacy is going to be Freo’s preference going forward. A third tall WA boy like McGovern might be attractive to them with their ongoing failure to convert in front of the big sticks. Fair chance MM was front loaded, so they may just be happy to improve their salary cap position (or hopefully he was front ended too) His age profile gives us a chance to phase in Mirkov in a couple of years and gives us a bit more experience in the big man department. The prospect of TDK and Lobb taking the third banana tall defender away from Harry and Charlie is quite salivating. (For the record, my preferred forward/ruck mid priced target would be Darcy Cameron from the Collywobbles - salary cap issues with Mihocek, Cox, young Lynch, and rated youngsters Will Kelly and McMahon and the pressure to trade in Wiedeman or similar might shake him loose)
