The Common Sense Thread

Ok, whilst we are young and growing up, we are taught things that are described as common sense.

For example, when fishing, be careful not to be too hasty when baiting a hook or you will get the sucker through your thumb.

Or walk loudly through long grass to let snakes know you are coming.

Or swim between the flags at the beach.

What are other 'common sense' rules that you were taught?

When shooting a gun, make sure the barrel is pointing away from you.

Don't give a sub machine gun to your 8 year old kid.

Don't climb power line poles, much less swing on the power lines.

Eat food and drink water. It's a handy way to stay alive.

I dunno about when i was a kid, but when i was at Kapooka and asked my platoon sergeant for advice on whether or not to tick the 'yes' box to parachutist volunteer, he said "never jump out of anything you can't jump straight back into". I thought that was gold then and still do now.

I would have been about 4-5 years old, was in a shop called Venture (kinda like a K-Mart or Big W or something. I was in the toys section, my parents were elsewhere.

After I had had enough of looking at toys, I went to meet my parents, wherever they were. On the way, I saw a very short woman. She was not much taller than me. I didn't know what to make of her. So I walked over with a big grin on my face and said 'hello little lady' and petted her on the head

She didn't see the funny side and she started yelling at me. I got a little upset. She made me take her to see my parents.

When we got there, Mother was in the checkout, dad was standing there by himself. The short lady angrily told him what I had done. Dad was trying to be all serious and apologetic, but he burst out laughing uncontrollably at the whole situation. He was all like 'no, no, I'm sorry, I didn't mean... hahahaha' and the lady stormed off.

Dad later composed himself and pointed out that there was nothing funny about the situation and I was still in trouble for being rude.

Haha, awesome. Stupid woman though, she should get a sense of humour, it's not your fault she was basically inviting you to pet her on the head by being about the same height as a 4-5 year old.

She could have made a friend, but no, she had to get all defensive.

lol yeah. I'm not advocating my behavior in any way, but christ it's not like I knew any better. She could have been a little nicer about it. Hell I'd probably just seen that film Willow and thought she was a magical being or something.
