BTW, if any of you ever get the chance to go to a traditional Hangi, you will not regret it.

I have never tasted anything better than Kumara (not ****ing sweet ****ing potatoe ) from a well cooked Hangi.

Everything tastes good at a hangi. I used to share a house with a couple of Maori guys and we used to have them at our place. Chicken, pork, sweet potato, cabbage... awesome.

Great food, great company, great singing. :thumbsu:

Best pies I've ever had are probably in Tassie, but thats another story.

We eat goat a lot. Lovely meat and the T-Chow in Chinatown does it well. I buy it from the Muslim Hillal butcher on South Rd for myself (they also sell Venison).

Venison and so called 'wild boar' over here is pretty bland really. It's all farmed, and the real game flavours that come from what the animals eat in the wild, not on the farm (which feeds them grass or grain).

Emu, roo, camel and crocodile all pretty good if cooked as they should be.

Some others I've tried on my various global ventures

snake (many varieties)
eels
heaps of grubs and insects
horse
rat
various strange birds
monkey

Nothing overly offensive really. Haven't had dog or cat yet (to my knowledge) , but wouldn't shy away either.

^That's great.

I don't think there's a food in the world I wouldn't try at least once.

Actually the only thing I am really hesitant to try, and have had the opportunity but didn't, is sashimi fugu. It is well documented that quite a number of people only ever try that once.

Excellent food when done correctly. Tried doing a Hangi 20 years ago when living in Cairns. Burnt down half the back yard. To this day there's still a coral trout buried somewhere in that yard that we couldn't find. The rest of the meat was rather gritty after the banana leaves disintegrated.:(

Mighty impressive cooker there Toots. Have you ever tried smoking a corned leg of mutton on it? I've done it a few times on my Weber and it's superb. Generally i use red gum sawdust soaked in water and cook for 4 to 5 hours. Apparantly they used to call it "poor mans ham" in years gone by. Nothing poor about the flavour though.

Spaghetti Carbonara, taught to me by the chef at Enzo's restaurant at Norwood, where I worked years ago.....
When was Enzo's at Norwood? They have been at Hindmarsh for ever but I didn't know there was one at Norwood.

They have expanded into take home meals, Enzo's at Home which are Nonna-ish prepared meals.

Had camp oven peacock once. Not bad but a smidgen on the dry side, due to its lack of body fat I suspect. Flesh colour not unlike chicken breast.

From the page you linked:

"Enzo's is one of Adelaides most favourite and treasured restaurants. We moved to our Hindmarsh premises in March 1999, opening after the famous Da Clemente restaurant closed and prior to that, the charming Ettore Restaurant."

The Enzo's at Norwood would appear to be a different one. It was in the old house which last I knew had become Chloes. I worked there from about 1985-1986 (?).

Coincidentally, I also did a brief waiting stint at Da Clemente too, when it was on Rundle St.

Da Clementes was great. On Sunday, we went to Salsas at West Beach. Fantastic. We each chose from the specials with the bride having gnocci with a gorgonzola sauce, my eldest daughter having spatchcock, and me gnawing on a venison osso bucco. Magnificent! But I'll definitely be having the spatchcock next time, it was superb. A very interesting wine list too.

For anyone who hasn't been there 'do yourself a favour'. The place has a real retro 60's feel about it with formica tables etc.

Thank's Pred. My old memory is not as good as it once was :o

Yeah its an interesting place Salsa. Interesting layout, pretty laid back, retro, nice place to go in summer. In terms of food ive found it pretty hit and miss. That venison osso bucco is great though. They used to have it on the main menu for a long time.

Enzos is top food. Love their cockles.

Chianti would still be my favourite restaurant though.

Mondiali on Unley road is great, as is Paparazzi.

As a Port fan I have to give a wrap to The Hydey too. Had some great meals there.

Had some "special" meals there also. (Bruce was sitting at the next table :p)

Had the osso bucco last time I was there. :thumbsu:

Enzo's is good and eat there often but my favourite Italian restaurant in Adelaide is Auge.

Auge is fantastic modern italian. Wished I was more cashed up so I could go there more often.

$20?

Not sure if the menu on their website is up to date but their cheapest entree is $22, let alone main. Their cheapest main is $32.

Im more than happy to pay for that as its worth it, but 2 3-course meals, drinks, bottle of wine or two and youre forking out serious coin. I just did a mock meal what Id imagine my wife and I would buy on the current menu and it added up to $160 just for food. Worth it, but puts it in the rare category for me at the mo'.

Yes it is certainly not cheap. I class Auge as a special occasion restaurant and only go there a couple of times a year. Fortunately both my wife's and my student days are a number of decades behind us.

Yeah, fair enough. I don't drink so eating out is often cheaper for me as well.

I have only been there once, my meal (lunch so we skipped entree) was about $40 and the ex-missus' was about $30. From memory I had the Ravioli and she had and entree size Gnocci (much to my chagrin!)

It was great, but I agree, I have a hard time paying $40 for a plate of pasta even if I can afford it. Especially when I can get just as good if not better in the Cafes of Melbourne for $15.

I tell ya, the things we do for a bit of crumpet  - and from memory I didn't even get that!
