I would like to see the Rising Star winner also awarded the Jim Stynes Medal.
This would not require any change in the title of the award, nor would it affect the current sponsor's naming rights. The winner would have the additional honour of being presented with a medal dedicated to a great AFL player (can he now be classified a Legend) and an ambassador of the young.

With all due respect, what's the point?

If we were to bring in a Jim Stynes Medal, I'd love to see it awarded to players who take a special interest in community improvement, charitable work, and so on.

I like the idea of a Jim Stynes medal, but not sure who you'd award it to.

Maybe the best player of the International Rules series?

The rumour is that it'll be the Jim Stynes Medal for services to the community by a footballer. AFL are looking at something according to Vlad.

He's already the best player in the International Rules series IIRC.

Sounds good

I'm pretty sure the medal is already given to the best on ground in the Australia vs Ireland matches.

the problem is, most afl footballers are out in the community, so the award would go to someone like Harry obrian who uses it to get his mug in the papers/on screen

personally, the work Jim has done here in Australia, I would like to see the Stynes award in the australian of the year awards, recognising someone each year who has dedicated thier time to charity and community work

There is a good chance Stynes would be in the running for Australian of the Year. It's a bit unfortunate that because of his public profile, he would be more likely to get it, rather than any of the several thousands who have donated just as much time and effort to various community causes.

Certainly, Stynes deserves such an honour as much as any of them - but just because he is a 'celebrity' and gets to do his charity work in front of the TV cameras and at thousand-dollar fund-raising dinners, doesn't mean the other people, rattling tins on street corners in the rain, or cutting sandwiches in a youth shelter aren't worthy of the same recognition.

I have great admiration for all of them, and wish I was less self-centred and able to do the same.
