EGM resolutions defeated

Tuesday, 2 October 2007
The two resolutions put forward at tonight's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of the Essendon Football Club have been convincingly defeated.

The resolutions, seperately, called for the removal of Chairman, Ray Horsburgh, and the removal of Managing Director, Peter Jackson, from the Essendon board.

The first resolution, to remove Mr Jackson, was defeated.

Of the 7,701 valid proxy votes, 6,782 (88%) voted against the resolution. The vote of those attending the EGM tonight reflected the result of the proxy votes.

The second resolution, to remove Mr Horsburgh, was also defeated.

Of the 7,701 valid proxy votes, 6,176 (80%) voted against the resolution. The vote of those attending the EGM tonight reflected the result of the proxy votes

Around 700 people attended the EGM.

Essendon board member, Daryl Jackson, chaired the meeting.

"These were serious charges being put against two members of the board so it was important this meeting was conducted fairly, properly and allowed a members to put forward their votes," he said.

Former Essendon President, Graham McMahon, was among those present and spoke against both motions which he described as "damaging".

He said while the people who put forward the two motions are passiontae members and it's their right to call this meeting, the motions were ill founded, misguided and driven by the emotion of the decision not to renew Kevin Sheedy's contract.

"The Club belongs to its members and its good that they take an active interest in the Club but if members are unhappy and want to change the board it must be done calmly and sensibly with suitable candidates put forward. That opportunity arises each year and if you want to make change use the Annual General Meeting, not a meeting like this."

You would imagine that without Patrick Smith it wouldn't have even got this far. He owes your club big time.

I'm glad this is behind us now but I for one would like to see the club be run a little more professionally off field than it has been lately.

Time to move on and into a big 2008.:thumbsu:

Not being at the meeting, I would like to know out of interest, who was responsible for counting the proxy votes & deciding which were valid? Did they read out all the proxy forms & what they voted for, just curious, as with our number of members, that seemed a very low number of votes, if there were only 700 people there.

Also, is Daryl Jackson related to Peter?

They didnt read out or count the proxy votes . They where counted before hand by the returns officer (the same bloke who has done all our elections since 1980 ) There where about 9000 proxy votes and around 900 people present. The show of hands at the meeting pretty much matched the proxy returns. 88% in favour of Peter Jackson staying in his position and 80% in favour of Ray Horsborough staying as president.
I guess we are not such a rabble after all.

Re: Meeting tonight

Any word on how tonight's meeting went?

saveessendon got absolutly smoked. Jackson kept his spot with 90% voting for him to stay as a director and CEO and Horsborough had 80% votes in favour of him staying on as president.
The save essendon group where un organised and to be honest a joke. Yes they are passionate about Essendon and had every right to have their say but it was so un profesional it wasnt funny. No idea about how the procedings at the EGM should go. Arguing over what order the resolutions should be held. No real idea about the legalities of the proxy votes. Just a lot of huff and puff about how the Sheedy situation was handled and no real substance or answers on who was in line to replace anyone or plan for the future. It cost $65,000 to show up exactly how unprofesional they where.

Wonder what Patrick Smith will have to say this morning on KB's show.

While I was really dubious about the SaveEssendon group from the start, and I did vote against both resolutions, the board members did show themselves up as a bunch of arrogant sods last night.

They did not show enough respect to the members, and used the meeting to pontificate about how overwhelmingly the resolutions were defeated. I do not have much confidence in the board as it stands, and while an EGM is definitely not the way to turn them out, I hope that we have some better chaff at the next AGM.

If nothing else, this whole affair will at least make the members take more of an interest in the running of our club. I think with a more active constituency, our club would not have degenerated to the state of affairs in which we now find ourselves. Are we a second-rate club yet? I don't think so, but let's not become one.

As members we will need to work really hard to make this club great again. It's not federal politics, it's more important than that; we need to get involved.

IMO

agreed wholeheartedly

whilst $60k got pissed away holding the meeting, at the very least the message should have got thru to those at the top to treat the positions they hold with the respect those positions deserve, not to assume they are free to do as they like without at least come level of reflection as to possible ramifications & to stop treating efc members & supporters with contempt & like idiots.

& hopefully the apathy that has seemingly spread throughout the efc membership over the last 30 odd years will begin to abate. we all have a say & should not be intimidated by those who 'supposedly' hold the clubs best interests at heart.

It wont be a joke this time next year if we have another bad year.
If we fail in 2008 and a strong ticket is formed I think there will be change and boardroom bloodshed.
Hornsburgh cannot be compared to McGuire or Pratt in terms of credentials or charisma and I worry about Jackson having so much power within our footy club. He has overseen the club from success to our decline in 6 years.

Pratt is rich...he has no Charisma.

Horsborough has credentials as good as Pratt or McGuire. What he has done in the buisness world is vry good. The problem is he has not got the media or public speaking skills required.

Hornsburgh's problem is that he has never single-handedly driven a TV station into the ground. Is Alan Bond available?

They did not show enough respect to the members
Rubbish. The chairmen of the night let them waffle on about other rubbish not even relating to the 2 resolutions. Apparently, these were checked by their lawyers. There must be a real life Lionel Hutz around somewhere here, because it was a complete balls up on their behalf.

Alos, how can anyone wanting their cuase to be taken seriously rock up to a meeting in a tracksuit? They can **** off.
