i think we may need to trade murphy for a young midfielder. perhaps we can look at farren ray. we will also probably add matthew moody from brisbane, a tall wingman who hasnt settled in well in queensland

Jacob Surjan is another WA boy who's looking pretty decent

He's not that good. He plays a lot like Heath Black. We don't need another of them. We don't need ANYONE. Lets just train our current guys up instead of searching for the quick fix. Tarrant was a quick fix that kind of went wrong. He is better than Murphy/Campbell at the moment and if we had of been like last year I can guarentee we would have done better than last year.

I don't think Tarrant went wrong at all. He's been here just over half a season and is one of our best players this year, certainly in our top ten. Farmer went "wrong". Peake's collarbone went 'wrong". Schammer's appendix went "wrong". Johnson's tribunal hearing went "wrong". Murphy's form went "wrong".

He is on a long contract and will play another 4-5 years, so that is over a hundred games of football for us. Not exactly a quick fix. And high draft picks would be unlikely to produce a better result if you look at the statistics. Plus their first 50 games will be unreliable as they are simply learning the caper, and the coaches deciding if they are worth keeping. Walker (pick 6?) produced 150 games, but I'd take 100 from Tarrant anytime. Dunn, another high draft pick (5?) has produce nothing. Murphy has only shown promise, nothing else. Polak? Sampi? It is a lottery.

Tarrant has gone quite well considering the total lack of pre-season, lack of practice with our other forwards, and the lack of a crumber in the forward line.

I'm not saying that Tarrant has been bad, but we were going to use him as our assault on the GF... but we have gone wrong as a team so that trade wasn't needed in hingsight cause we could have used this year to help build Campbell/Murphy/Drum.. Hindsight is a lovely thing.

It may not have worked for the 07 flag, but it'll be handy for the next 3 attempts!

As Gav pointed out, alot went wrong for us this year, and on top of that we had an average coach. Next year will be much, much better.

If i had free reign on the list i would attempt the following:

Retire/delist:

These will free up a spot on the main list:

Cook
Walker
Browne
Webster
Haddrill

Free up a rookie spot:

Parker
Copping
McManus

Total = 5 main list spots and 3 rookie spots:

Elevate Foster:

Total = 4 main list spots and 4 rookie spots

I would shop around Mundy/Drum/Murphy/Campbell. Losing two of these players and getting 2x 1st rounders.

Total = 6 main list spots and 3 rookie spots:

Offer Brisbane 2nd and 3rd round pick for both Moody and Hadley. Both WA players who are out of favour. Both left WA with big wraps.

Total = 4 main list spots and 3 rookie spots:

Use our 3x 1st round picks to score 3 of: Masten/Palmer/Morton/Ebert

Save 1x main list spot for the preseason draft. Invite both Sampi and Krakouer to train with us. Select the better performer at the preseason draft.

Use the rookie draft to secure 1x mature ruckman from the WAFL. Use 2x selections for more ruckman. 1x some other player.

I like the look of most of that rgauci, although I'd much rather use a 3rd round pick on a 17 year old than waste a spot on the list on Sampi or Krakouer.

That's close to what I was suggesting a few weeks back. Only things I'd change would be Webster stays, MCarr goes; and I suggested keeping one position available if we see something we like that will be available through the PSD - if there's no-one ready to go, then take another pick in the PSD - a longer term "project". But I wouldn't go down the Sampi / Krakouer road (unless you mean Nathan Krakouer or Luke Sampey... ;)). Also I'd be more tempted to go one more mid in the rookies + 2 rucks, rather than 3 rucks.

I have no problem with this in theory, however I think it is overly optimistic. I just I don't see how we would be able to get two decent 1st round picks out of the players you suggest. Maybe if Carlton got the priority pick, then they might swap that for Mundy but then again are they allowed to swap their priority pick?

I don't think there will be that much interest in Campbell and only limited interest in Murphy or Drum (Do remember that all three are currently fringe players in a bottom four side). They are rated only within our club.

Why trade Drum for Moody or Hadley when they are the same sort of player? I know they're local but so what, Drum is as good if not better than them.
We need pacey midfielders, its obvious!

Rumble should and will go from the rookie list as well.
