You blokes who bag the skipper need to seriously watch our games a lot closer. Those who criticise him obviously know little about footy and leadership. This guy got us to a grand final replay on will and determination alone. The bloke optimises everything a collingwood captain should. That is someone who plays with the passion, guys, determination and someone who leads his charges. Without him we wouldn't have the 2010 flag. He is still a very valued member of this side and coaches that backline on field. Keep up the great work Maxy. An example of a bloke with limited talent has been able to achieve what so little people before him have been able to achieve. All you who bag him should just think about the role he plays for our side. Limited knowledge of the inner workings of a football club and what makes them tick!

I reckon you meant 'epitomises' :)

I take great comfort in the fact that most of the Maxwell baggers have no balanced rational view of his total contribution, and are more influenced by 'flashy' football, not strategy or structure.

Go and tear 'em apart this Friday skip.

Nick is a pure example of the value of leadership on and of the ground. Never has it been of more value than today with the AFL code being subject to 24 hour, 7 day per week, 11 months a year scrutiny.
We all know his ability as a player.
I would direct any critics of Maxwell value to our club to cast their measuring tapes over a club like Carlton. The lack of leadership is palpable in their collective body language and demeanor.
A fantastic player but somewhat unnatural and reluctant leader hands over the reigns and leadership beomes a real issue with real consequences.

Nick will know when to go, when the time is right to hand the captaincy over and it be done.

No one hates him. Some just dont think he is best 22. He was great in 09, 10 however he hasn't played that well in my opinion for at least a few years. Great leader now over 30 years old and fading every year. Im happy he got a one year extension, however i would not be happy if he was considered an automatic inclusion if his form was poor next year. Nick Maxwell would agree.

I was interested to read the explanation of the "Presti" jumper situation (the fact that we hand his number to our first choice in the draft) and I thought at the time that Maxy and Benny Johnson were "cut from the same cloth" as the selfless Prestigiacomo. Players like Maxy are so valuable to any club because they embody all that is good about our sport and our team. He is honest (with himself and with his team mates), he is courageous, he leads by example and he grabs hold of his team mates when they need to be dragged along by him. He has never been a star player but seldom in my 6 decades+ of following the team have we had a better man at the helm. I'm also glad Maxy got another year and I'd find it surprising if he didn't help the club in some capacity in the future as well. Few players get the absolute maximum out of their ability over a sustained career, but Nick Maxwell has.

Great post.
Have you seen this thread...
May be exactly what you're talking about.

He is a gun and probably one of our most important players.... I love this bloke and he has turned into a really good player and probably the best leader we have seen for a long time

I've always believed that Nick Maxwell suffers from only one real problem. That problem has zero to do with his leadership qualities or his football ability but is purely about aesthetics. Nick does not look like a footballer and in fact (with apologies to Nick) probably looks more like the geek you hated in school. The simple fact is that some people just can't get their head around a player like that being the leader of the club and I'm half inclined to believe that it's those people, and probably predominantly less mature people who are constantly putting him down and calling for him to be dropped or sacked from the captaincy. Any realistic assessment of what Nick brings to the team will tell you that as a leader he has been inspirational and as a footballer he has performed at a consistently high level for a very long time. He doesn't possess the silky skills of a Nathan Buckley but his fearless attack on the ball and his second, third and fourth efforts are not matched by many in the history of the club. For me, only Gavin Brown is comparable. At the same time, Maxy has made what some would have described as a dysfunctional backline into one of the real strengths of the side through his leadership and astute knowledge of the game. It will never cease to surprise me that there are those on this board who are happy to completely overlook his contribution because of what I can only imagine is the populist view that the captain should look good.

I have no problem with Maxwell being captain and never have. I have an issue with him being considered an auto selection when either his form doesn't warrant selection or when even in form he isn't in our best 22 players. Both can be argued pretty strongly imo. People have made plenty of pretty good points concerning this and it's a bit cheap dismissing them as less mature people who can't get past the way he looks on a football field. He was excellent for us in 2009-11 particularly in the finals however I completely reject your statement that he has performed at a consistently high level for a long time. His form this season and last has been indifferent and his current game as a defender is very limited - he is neither a great defensive player nor a very damaging counter attacking player. If we were to list the players in terms of their value to our current defence he would be clearly last imo and with Toovey a certain starter next season it is stupid not to consider that he isn't best 22. Additionally I think you can make a pretty good argument to play Seedsman off half back at his expense or even Thomas if he makes it back by the end of the season. The point is these are all reasonable arguments that people have as to why he might not be in our best 22 that you have basically dismissed as immature.

fwiw I think in terms of his contract a one year deal was clearly the best decision, I'd expect him to give up the captaincy next season and to be in and out of the senior side depending on injuries, matchups etc. They might also try him in another position such as defensive forward since I think it's unlikely he's in our best defence.

This

I have never hated the man nothing but love but this year he has been shown up and has been taken advantage of by other clubs

He is a champion of the club but next year he needs to give up the C and be chosen on form alone

Maxwell is in the best 22 - he's job isn't flashy but its essential. We are a better team with him in it as a player and will struggle to replace him if he left. Tony Shaw made comments about him in the 22 when he first took the job, he was wrong then and the knockers are wrong now

I just want to make it clear that I do not hate Maxwell in the slightest in fact I love the bloke. However this season he did struggle for form and that is a fact, I wanted him dropped for Keefe but his last two weeks have been sensational from Maxy. I will never question he leadership skills and determination he has for our great football club.

He is 10 times the bloke Scarlett is and you could see that if you watched the club last night. Arghh god I hate Scarlett.

Maxie will never die wondering what could have been.
Few of us can say that.

I admire him warts and all....maybe more so for the warts.

I'm looking forward to the "eat one, Maxwell haters" thread.

As I mentioned in the podcast a couple of moons ago, he's an asset to the team and integral to the back 6. Buy you know what you get with him.. Don't expect clean sheets or flashy skills.

He's our enforcer, our 1% man and our leader from the back half. Get around him

Your wrong it has everything to do with football ability, also the overrating of him drives those who don't think he is in the 22 to try 'prove the point' so even more focus goes onto his mistakes and then this turns to frustration when people are blind to it weekly.

You all forgot to mention how he came 5th in the Copeland last year.

Maybe we used the 'Mugabe' system for counting votes:)
Maxy is a great Collingwood captain & deserves the praise he receives.
However he is also unfairly maligned & an easy target for some frustrated supporters.
Just keep on doing what you do Maxy.
History will be on your side.
