maybe, but didn't him leaving get us Acres, Aish and take your pick out of Serong or Henry? We might not be in the position we are in if he didn't leave.
Then Neale out meaning Serong plays every game. Get Young, Cerra and Brayshaw in the middle with Hill and Neale gone. I say that’s a win, definitely. We were ‘rebuilding’, so Neale left. Like I’ve said repeatedly, it’s better for the club that Neale and Hill left.
Mayne compensation landed Hill. Hill out landed Acres + picks. That’s like starting off with a paperclip and bargaining your way up.

Exactly this. He would be more then proud that his brother potentially has a chance. If Hill wanted a flag, he would’ve pushed for Collingwood, Richmond one of those types. It’s all about the money money money.

I think he was underpaid at Hawthorn with all their stars. Freo paid him probably what he was worth at the time but he went to another level and St Kilda with no stars and struggling for a number of years was able front end contract and bank a lot of money to throw a tonne of money at a number of players at once. Suddenly with some good draft picks & trading they are a destination club.

Hats off to them they did it tough for a few years but looks like the strategy is coming together.

Could have been Ben King & Acres 😢

Freo bought Brad Hill, paying more than Hawthorn would and then fronting it, then fronting even more with an extension.

Then he left when the value years for Freo were coming and good for him.

Freo turned Chris Mayne compensation into that which lead to Serong.

Not unhappy with that.

Acres talk is going to be the next Priddis/Taberner thread

What are you watching that I’m not? Absolutely everything about acres I’ve seen apart from injuries says b22!

Acres can play - no doubt about that, it’s just that he has a long history of not quite attacking a contest at the required level of courage shall we say. And that is frowned upon by most clubs and their players.

Acres is certainly best 22, bet your house on it. You might not rate him but I believe that is how Longmuir sees it.
Him and Aish are our two wingers, with both providing good aerial ability to float back as well as good skills to go forward. They also both can rotate through mids as well to give Tucker/Cerra and co a chop out. Aish is definitely better with the ball but Acres only worry on his spot is Bewley (who will be great depth over the next year or two) and potentially Frederick when he has a good enough tank to run the wing (which is not this year).

Think that pressure of Bewley on his spot will be enough to keep him from dodging contests.

Think Acres is B22 but he's probably not the guy you turn to when the chips are down. Good news is all our mids will have pressure on their spots this year.

Think that Hill trade will prove one of our best ever in a few years. It got us the majority of the currency for Serong, Aish, Acres plus some points for Henry.

Hill, Langdon, 2nd (#28), a future 1st downgrade (and a bunch of later mostly worthless picks) = Serong, Henry, Aish, Acres, Frederick

Getting Chapman with our 2020 1st makes that 1st downgrade fairly insignificant (Essendon took Reid with the pick that would have been ours otherwise).

Essendon took Harrison Jones with the 2019 2nd rounder we would have had (#28 which moved to #30).

We got two top 10 picks (on top of another using our 1st rounder) plus Aish, Acres and Frederick. The Hogan trade sucked retrospectively but think the work in 2019 at the trade and drafting table counters it.

So it’s a criticism of Longmuir? He’s the guy picking him in the 22 instead of frowning at him.

He (Acres) was dropped the last time he “offended” and was good on return so perhaps got the message. I think as it was his first offence at our club, it was handled well.

It’ll be interesting though to see how it’s dealt with the next time “it” occurs if it does, but I’m very confident that it won’t go down well with the coaches or match committee and they’ll again handle it appropriately.

All players have flaws they have to work on. I’ve seen quite a few fantastic players avoid hard contests at times. Nothing unknown about Acres when the club pushed for him to be included in the Hill trade. Coaching is largely about maximizing a players strengths and improving their weaknesses. I doubt if Acres was recruited to replace Hill’s hardness at the contest, but he would easily have him covered, and is comfortably our best wing option.

Very decent pre-season analysis of us.

Predicts "just in" or "just out" (9th/10th) of the 8.

Good coach, strong defensively bulding on the good defensive structures put in place by Lyon.

Need to work out how to "weaponise" Fyfe.

Pearce coming back in is very important, especially for us to play finals.

The young midfielders are becoming very good and Mundy is under-rated and is still earning his spot.

The heat is on Lobb who has the potential but who has never put together a full season of good footy. He needs to do more to justify what Freo have invested in him.

They are right about Lobb though, he’s getting paid the $’s so he should be doing more. Tabs was a rookie, so he was never on huge coin
Agree, with the qualifier being that we just took over his existing contract from GWS I thought, which we had quite likely caused them to over pay for in the first place. Karma baby.

Can’t wait for this one

Hopefully he commentates random games involving two Victorian sides near the botttom of the ladder I give zero ****s about.

Even better would be at the same time as our games so I care even less about him ruining the coverage.

It'll be our games. Basil said on the radio this morning he isn't commentating this season because all the commentary bar boundary riders will be in Melbourne.

West Coast won’t play in Perth when we do except for derbies. You can almost guarantee it’ll be when they play in Melbourne.
