The never ending Priddis debate - part II

Gaff: 4 contested possessions, 1 clearance, 0 tackles, 19 uncontested possessions.

Yeo: 12 contested possessions, 1 clearance 3 tackles 11 uncontested possessions.

Priddis: 21 contested possessions, 9 clearances, 8 tackles, 10 uncontested possessions.

Seriously, Shuey and Gaff in particular had to have somebody feeding them the ball on the outside. Who was it if not Priddis?
(surprised Shuey played so outside given he has a decent inside game but it worked)

7 Contested possessions, 0 clearances, 6 tackles, 11 uncontested possessions. Pretty solid, given 0 clearances can be attributed to him not yet being a part of stoppage structures.
Perhaps, more importantly, Sheed led all comers on the ground with 4 direct assists for scoring shots.

How did you rate his game today out of interest? I'd say he was somewhere around the 8-10 mark if I was ranking everyone from the team.

You had a lot of good players today, I'd probably have him in the top 5, and I expect to see that reflected in the coach's votes, I think Lecras, Masten, Shuey were similarly good in their roles so I'd place him about third. Given I am not probably putting enough weighting on defender's performances as that's hard as a neutral.

Stats don't tell the full story but they don't lie either. Where was the mountain of uncontested ball for Gaff and Shuey coming from?

They dont't necessarily have to come from the bottom of a pack though, could be from turnovers, knock-ons, ball gets tapped out to the open, win a free kick, a mark out in the open etc etc. To imply that all of Priddis' contested posessions resulted in Shuey and Gaffs uncontested ones is wrong.

He looks so much better when other guys stand up in the midfield. Since Yeo's been in there he's been able to have decent help there and that has improved his game dramatically. No longer is he having to carry the midfield and that means he can play solely as the extractor meaning he doesn't have to go by foot as much anymore. 31 disposals, 25 handballs, 21 contested, 9 clearances and 8 tackles shows just how much influence he had. Will only get better for him as Yeo, Sheed and Duggan progress.

We don't want shuey , yeo , gaff on the ground or stuck inside the contest where they can't use their great attributes .
Priddis played his role very well today and should get some acknowledgement for it .

One of the primary arguments for the negative case has been that the feeder role is now obsolete in modern footy. This win (while being a very small sample space) implies that the role still has a place with the right set of tactics, and more than one or two quality midfielders to feed to.

The tide could really turn in this thread with a few more results like this one.

Well technically it already has...as we are now playing a much more flexible midfield setup that has seen the mainstay spend more time out of there.
We have drastically changed that setup and are now seeing results.

Oh please....We should acknowledge that Priddis played much better in recent weeks but it doesn't suddenly make him the poor player who has carried the midfield without help. The criticism directed at him was accurate. The difference now is that finally the ball isn't being directed to him as first option but is going to other (free, faster and more skilful options) people like Sheed, Shuey, Yeo, LeCras, Duggan and Masten. That leaves him free to do what he is best at and that is tackle in close and try and get the ball out of congestion. I think he has also been taken out of the following role around the ground so no longer just jogs from end to end (I must admit I'm not sure about that but it appears to be the case. In other words, he is being given a role more suited to his restricted talents and this can aonly be to the team's advantage

I did notice that a bit last night. It was only on telly so couldn't see the off the ball stuff but he doesn't seem to be involved in transition defence at all unless he gets caught out and just has to chase because he has to.
I thought last week it was because we dominated, but in a 50/50 game against quality opposition it wasn't really an issue either.

Not quite sure what you're saying there (I've read that first bit 4 times and can't figure out what it means).

Continuing on though, another argument of the negative case is that Priddis needs to be dropped because he can only play the following role, and we can't improve as a team with him in the side, nor compete with the best teams with him in the side.

If he has indeed been taken out of the following role and is contributing to a successful side, that could seriously change the tone of this thread.

I sit very much between the two camps.

I don't think we are progressing very far with Priddis as our best mid, however that doesn't mean I think we can't go deep sept at some stage with him in the side.

IMO Priddis is a better footballer than Barlow, and right now he is a bit support player in a quality midfield. That is the role Priddis should be playing for us, part of the rotation - but not "the" rotation. I have noticed him coming off a half forward flank a lot more.

I have faith in the direction Simmo is taking our midfield and wouldn't be surprised to see Priddis as one cog.

Well done on the win guys. I saw first hand how much of a champion Priddis is.

When it was a 50/50 ball at a stoppage Priddis was the man to get in there and handball it out to an open man.

Such clean disposal of the ball in such contested areas.
