Monday, September 3rd, 2007 at 12:49 pm

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

GEELONG have been dealt a major blow on the eve of the finals, with key defender Matthew Egan suffering a fracture of the navicular on his right foot.

The Cats have just released a statement, adding, “The club will be seeking a surgical opinion and look at all available options to get Matthew back on the field this season.”

Re: Egan

Throws up an interesting option on what to do for finals now. We need another key backman.

Enter H (again) or Sam Hunt?

Re: Egan

Pump him full of painkillers and he'll be right

Re: Egan

Thanks for cheering me up with the laugh :thumbsu:

its fair to say we have no Key back depth, someone has to play. I hope its not H :o

Re: Egan

Ah shit. Dammit. Bad news. I doubt we'll see him back.

Maybe Lonners in defence...??? Too little experience?

Re: Egan

The poor thing. He would be shattered!

HE has not missed a game for 2 seasons... and this happens now!

Geelong has confirmed a fracture in Matthew Egan's right foot.
BREAKING NEWS: GEELONG defender Matthew Egan faces a race against time to be part of the Cats' finals campaign after scans today revealed a fracture in his right foot.

The club has confirmed the 24-year-old has a fracture in the navicular bone, a bone in the middle of the foot just down from the ankle.

Cats doctor Chris Bradshaw said the club would look at every surgical option possible and was hoping to have a plan by the end of today.

``In the normal sense he wouldn't get back in the time-frame needed to (play finals this year) so we'll look at as many options as we can,'' Bradshaw said.

Egan injured the foot in a marking contest in the first quarter of Saturday night's win over Brisbane at the Gabba.

Re: Egan

Agree with above.

Rooke takes the back pocket position while Harley moves on to the second tall. We are very tall in defence and this will not hurt as much as some would believe IMO.

Scarlett needs to adjust the way he plays though - will have to adopt a more defensive role rather than attacking.

Re: Egan

Shit news.

Anyway, Harls to CHB - Rooke to take the small forward that Harls would normally take, I suppose.

Feel terrible for Matty - but we'll see how they go getting him rehabbed, hopefully if we can make it through to the final stages, he can come back in.

Re: Egan

The fact remains we are either good enough or we are not.

Scarlett was missing and we still won a match by 12 goals because we played direct footy giving our fowards a chance. :thumbsu:

Re: Egan

Welcome to our living hell boys.

I don't think you'll be too hampered, Scarlett just takes Egans man and a medium/tall backman comes in, Rooke....Johnston.

If you lose Mooney or Ablett THEN you have cause to worry.

P.S. If the Eagles lose on Friday feel free to drop a game so we can switch sides in the finals draw. Much rather play you in the GF than the PF.

Re: Egan

Bit of liquid nails and he'll be right for Sunday. No way he can rest for a few weeks and be ready for the GF. Surely those man cans would be fully developed by then.
