Anyone know if the penalties for traffic infringements have changed recently? I got a speeding fine for doing 10km/h over and it's $200 and 2 demerits which I thought was a bit much considering under 10 is no demerits.

Far canal. Just got charged $11 for parking at the airport. I was there for just under 1 hour.

night-time robbery. bastards.

Park nearby, get the person to call you when they are outside then drive through and pick them up.

It's what I do, as you said the airport gouges you for parking otherwise.

Always been like that, it sucks that you were in the 10-19 infringement range.

It's officially Summer!

Qantas? alinta? Telstra?
I don't think Qantas qualifies as infrastructure. The airports do though and they should not have been sold off

Alinta, western power, Telstra - the infrastructure that gets those services to households (wires, pipes, cables etc) should be govt owned. You can then have private companies paying to use that infrastructure then providing it to the public

Is this what we have to look forward to

I'm not very bright when it comes to anything that has maths involved so I'm confused as to how the mum and dad and western employee shareholders are going to make money from their share investment when the business already runs at a loss and they aren't going to put the prices up. Can someone with some nous tell me how that works

One of the greatest mining booms of all time and the state is drowning in debt

First the wharves and now western power - bandaid fixes and should labor get in at the next election we get to listen to them blame the previous government for the next four years the same as this one, quite incorrectly mind you, blames the previous government

I'm disillusioned with it all TBH and there is nought we seem to be able to do about any of it.

Sell western power and build a zoo - sums up this government beautifully

The usual things seems to be cut jobs, cut maintenance and cut investment in future upgrades or renewal. Basically freeze/lock the infrastructure pretty much in the state it is in now and run it into the ground over time.

Western Power is a loss-making entity.

By keeping it, the govt is required to fund that loss on an ongoing basis.

By selling it (in reality deregulation is more important than privatisation) then power prices would go up. Or the new owner would fund the ongoing losses.

As end users we don't pay a price for power that is reflective of the cost of generation and (more importantly) distribution.

So which outcome do people want?

It doesn't.

So, what do people think about privatising Western Power?

It's stupid, should never privatise infrastructure.

The government's fiscal irresponsibility during the mining boom has put the state into a situation where it needs to consider things like this, a mass sell off of assets to haul itself out of debt. The government should have been using that money to improve itself from a public transport perspective by building train lines, tram lines, using that money to fund trains, trams and to a lesser extent roads in order to service the city for the next 50 years.

Instead we have shit like Elizabeth Quay.

We also have the Mandurah Railway Line, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital (nearly), Perth Arena, Perth Stadium (nearly), Perth City Link (nearly), Forrest Hwy, Freeway from Forrest Hwy to Burns Beach Rd, a 4 terminal airport with upgraded road access...

It's so easy to hate on Elizabeth Quay. The Vic govt probably spent more setting up Myki.

I know we are in a bit of a pickle atm but I'm glad they went ahead and built all this stuff. If they didn't it would have probably never happened.

I think you will find that most of those fall under the previous government

Essential services should never be privatised and electricity is an essential service. The problem is corporations will only buy something that is profitable and Western Power isn't profitable because of the sheer size and remoteness of the state. So either a) the corporation will buy only the profitable elements, leaving the government with the loss making elements without any of the profits, or b) they will abandon or neglect the loss making (read: regional) areas.

Subsidising essential services that can't practically be delivered by private companies is actually the core responsibility of government. The fact they would spend $8bn of the proposed $11bn on paying down debt shows how fundamentally this government has mishandled the economy. Selling the silverware is no solution.

The government's fiscal irresponsibility during the mining boom

The 'mining boom' didn't start in 2008.

The Northern rail line was started under Labor and finished under Liberal and the Southern rail line vice versa, IIRC. Is it worth assigning credit? If Barney gets punted next year will the stadium, rail link etc become ALP wins? Govts waste money regardless of who is in power.

You were the one assigning credit to the current government when the quay decision was questioned.
We have Richard court with his ridiculous bell tower and now Barnett with Elizabeth Quay - what a waste of tax payer funds all for the sake of legacies rather than practicality. At least the Perth Arena appears to be mocking critics and is attracting major artists and for opening tours to boot - I would say that is generating tourism moreso than the other two. If figures can be shown that show an increase in tourism for the other two then I'm more than happy to acknowledge their worth as well.

The boom started in about 2003 and peaked in early 2014 - plenty of time for a war chest to have been built or at least to have cleared the 3.5bil defecit the previous government left but instead the debt has increased substantially and Western Australia is staring down the barrel of a major recession and relief I think will be a long time coming.

He hasn't earnt the title of emporer Barnett for no reason and his contempt for people he supposedly governs is palpable. He banked on getting in to bed with abbot and Turnbull and it has backfired big time and it's us muggins now that's going to pay for it

Both parties need to start working together for a change for the good of the state rather than spending all their time blaming previous governments for **** ups. I have no faith in either of them TBH
