So if I said to you get on this bike and ride along the road and I will drive up behind you and hit you with (someone else's) car at 60km/h and offered you a helmet you'd decline?
If I said to you, get in this car and I will ram into you at speed, would you decline the offer of a helmet inside the car? Why don't people wear helmets in cars, it's most certainly safer? Because life is all about risk and reward; I would prefer a culture of respect among motorists and cyclists whereby I could drive along small local roads without expecting to be hit by some maniac driver. We don't have such a culture, unfortunately.

At 60km/h? Yeah I would and I'd be quite confident of surviving without any brain injury given I have a seatbelt, multiple airbags and a 5 star safety rating.

That you avoided answering my quite reasonable question and replied with this and some other obfuscational twaddle about society given your previous statements is telling though. :)

It wasn't a reasonable question though. If you told me you were about to punch me in the head, I'd ask for a helmet. We don't live life according to unlikely specific situations. As I've said, I will wear a helmet because we don't have a European culture, if we had a European culture, I probably wouldn't wear a helmet for short rides to the shops or park.

I think it was a perfectly reasonable question given your statement about helmets not providing any protection at speed. The fact you didn't want to answer it because the obvious answer was a direct contradiction to what you'd already claimed just goes to show how reasonable it was.

So you don't have any insurance?

Insurance is for broad based situations; I don't have insurance for, say, falling off my bike and spraining my wrist only ;)

:D Come on mate. It's a collection of specific things that might happen. You actually pay out hundreds of dollars a year for various types of insurance to cover yourself financially/medically in case any number of specific things happen.

And I wear a helmet on busy roads to cover a collection of specific things that might happen, just saying I wouldn't drill down so specifically that I would wear a helmet while riding to the park because you are going to run me down in someone else's car :p. We're both getting a little pedantic here, there's arguments for both sides, imo. I happily rode through Amsterdam with no helmet and din't think I was taking a major risk with my health or safety. I wouldn't do the same in Perth though. I wish I could.

Fair enough. Good talk.

I would wear a helmet in Amsterdam though but mostly because I'd be stoned off my ****.

How ridiculously nice is this Summer? 27 today and (allegedly) cloudy. 29, 28, 29, 29, 31, 29, 28 the rest of the week.

Two thirds the way through February and I think we've had 3 days over 35 for the year and there were 3 in December.

Ignoring the stupid day when it rained 96mm we've pretty much been sitting on the average temp all Summer without deviating much either way. Jan/Feb has felt like October/November used to (before Winter decided it was going to hang around and be a jerk) with consistently nice weather before it gets too hot. I've probably used by air con 3 or 4 times and haven't had a single '**** it's too hot to sleep' night all Summer. Bizarre.
