A lot of Perth cafes probably can't make concrete, then.

Mixing a small batch of concrete for a letterbox is pretty straightforward. Doesn't need to look good or have amazing strength as it will be buried.

It's surrounded by shitholes.

Public transport sucks.

And unlike other cities where you can get away with these things, in Perth if you aren't near the beach then what's the point?

What? It has a café called Horn & Lake or a bar called the Little Bull? People say Vic Park is this trendy area these days but I've never heard of anyone treating it like Freo or Fitzroy and going 'let's head out to Vic Park tonight!' to the group message at lunch time Saturday. It just isn't. The only good thing about that area is Sonny Walters, the grandstands at Bassendean Oval, and the fact it's ages away.

According to Wikipedia it was originally West Guildford. This must've been yonks ago as it's always been Bassendean during my lifetime.

WA has never done the 'west' thing or whatever. We aren't Victoria who insist on segregating small suburbs into north and west.

Suburbs don't need to be night life destinations to be trendy. How many people say 'let's go out in Footscray'? People like Vic Park, Maylands, South Perth/Como etc. not because everyone wants to go there every Friday and Saturday night, but because they are a rung or rungs below. There are some pubs, restaurants, cafes etc. which breaks the suburban monotony of everyone driving to massive shopping centres and having a coffee at Gloria Jean's or a beer at a theme pub etc. Perth isn't laid out like Melbourne and has a lot fewer high streets or whatever.

I'm not surprised people like Bassendean and Guildford. Not that expensive, still streets with trees and houses with white picket fences etc. and connected to the city by rail. Midland to Perth is only 25 minutes on the train, Bassendean more like 15. If you love the beach as most people from Perth who never go there claim to then probably don't move East, and if you've got $1m then don't move East unless you want an acreage, but if you have $500k to spend like a lot of people then it's a choice between somewhere like Bassendean and somewhere further from the city North or South that is still 10-15 minutes drive from the nearest beach. It's not like people are picking a 3x1 in Bassendean over the equivalent in Nedlands or Subiaco.

What does it matter what it is surrounded by?

It's public transport is fine, there is 3 conveniently located train stations, and they've opened up an events bus route to the new stadium / city.

Have you been into Bassendean lately? There is a few small bars that have opened up, Old Lira pizza moved in, and the shops have been renovated. They have an open air cinema during the summer, and there is plenty put on during the winter. Just because I said it is trendy doesn't put it in the same basket as Fremantle / Perth (which are the only real areas you would send that message about). It's a suburb that is trying really hard and is improving very quickly, and if you want to stay away then please do
