Just saw the tribute. Jesus, this is the Richie Benaud of football for me. It hits hard.

Also, I'm finding this football match boring as batshit. As Morrissey once said, has the world changed or have i changed?
Correct

Well, Morrisey certainly changed. Also, I'm finding this football match boring as batshit. As Morrissey once said, has the world changed or have i changed?
Doyen.
Commentators, and people in general, can take a leaf out of Dennis' book that the best option is often to say less.
Could you please put it in a memo to Taylor, Brayshaw, Eddie etc.
I remember listening to ABC Sportstalk, one cruisey Saturday morning. Dennis was a guest (catching up with his old mates) and he made the comment in relation to radio (paraphrasing), "with your words, paint a picture so that the listener can fully imagine the play, don't clog your dialogue with superflous words". This applies fully to football, tell the viewer exactly what is happening, ............ the phrase "footy factory" is superfluous.
Less is better.

Papalia does a shit load of research and prep in the lead up to his games.I think I read an interview where DC said he would put in hours of research as prep before his games on the weekend. Like any of the others do that now.
Had some great one liners "If Ronnie Burns built his own house, he would start with roof" but imo they actually ended up as a minor weakness when they become obviously pre scripted, a little cringe. It was interesting watching an 80s SOO game where he just calls it completely straight.
Bloke was still the king though.
Shame he can't articulate what he's written down into coherent speech.People don't like him but BT does as well.
Would if I could.
Footy and cricket both lost their way when it became a cast of thousands all talking over each other in the commbox.
For years I used to watch the FA Cup Final on SBS and it was just Martin Tyler. Half time was ads and crowd noise as he went off to make a cup of tea.
Footy is a long game that is constantly moving so it's a bit much to ask one person to call the whole game but two commentators taking turns doing play calling and a special comments person is plenty.

I watch EPL games on Stan and for their games they have one play by play commentator and then one analyst ex-player type.
Better commentary than the AFL commentary we get these days even if some of the games themselves can be dull nil all affairs.
Papalia and Brenton Speed are good because it's their job, not just something they fell into because they used to play footy.
I don't know if most people even know that Dave Culbert was long jumper and won silver at the Commonwealth Games. They just wheel him out every two years for Summer/Winter Olympics gigs. Long jump, curling, table tennis... he's got you.
Simon Hill only called soccer but was pretty good too. Calling tournaments like the Asian Cup is a tough gig. Outside the Aussie squads the majority of players are unknowns to the Australian audience and you are dealing with squads with East Asian, Arabic, Central Asian etc. naming conventions. When the Korean (WC) coach is getting his players to change shirts at training to confuse opposition scouts because they all look the same you know you have your work cut out for you as a caller but I don't remember him getting too many names wrong.
Then you turn on the footy and the commentators don't know if it's Josh Lay-lor or Josh Law-ler. The numbnuts reporter that doorstopped Jamarra Ugle-Hagan at the airport in Qld unironically asked him if he was happy with his 2025 season. Yep sure he's stoked with his 0 games and 957 media mentions.
I'm not sure if we ever do state funerals but if we do, Dennis Cometti should get one.
BT is a good commentator when he is actually calling the game, the problem is when he starts talking shit.People don't like him but BT does as well.

McGuire was similar when he used to do it.
If it brings some decent rain I'll be happy
