That's great for when you talk to your mates but as far as affecting our political system it has none. The only way to show you aren't happy with things is to keep voting the incumbent out which sends a message that you aren't happy with them.

That's all good and well but when the option is a giant douche or a turd sandwich you dont really care either way.

Yep, I've been voting informal for the last 5 years.

I just walk in, get my name signed off and walk out.

It's not very functional trying to get there and when you are looking to park somewhere near there and what I presume Wilsons are allowed to charge for parking is Obscene.

Convention centre is right next to the train station and busport, getting there is pretty easy?
Parking yes can be an issue, but public transport is the simple way to get there.

There are plenty of reasons to vote, even if it's a choice between Jack Johnson and John Jackson (Futurama, anyone?):

1. The party of your first preference gets public funding - like a dollar something but still, it adds up - so if you want to support a minor party to campaign for change, that's a plausible way;
2. As has been mentioned, if the ambivalent don't vote, the parties have to campaign to make sure their core supporters turn out to vote and the electorate becomes more polarised. A major advantage (in my view) of compulsory voting is it pulls both major parties towards the centre;
3. There are people in this world who would give anything to have the opportunity to vote, so I think it's a little disrespectful to take it for granted. Just take 10 minutes every few years to fill in a ballot and buy a ****ing sausage sizzle or a cupcake FFS;
4. Even in a safe lower house seat, you can still express your preferences in the lower house, and you can definitely have an influence in the shape of the upper house. Another advantage of our system - a stable majority (usually) in the lower house and minority parties competing for the balance of power in the upper house;
5. Sometimes the electorate needs to oust shitty Governments, even if the alternative isn't all that better;
6. Lastly, by voting, the public gets to remind the elected that they work for us - I don't trust the campaigners and sometimes they need a damn good reminder!

It sucks when the Uni tries to amp it up as a career opportunity and you realise at the end of it that it was a waste of time and they've pocketed your tuition fees.

A whole load of my friends who were studying psych/law, arts/law and similar combinations realised that their law degrees were the only ones that were worth the paper that they were printed on when they got into their final year.

I actually said that a little bit tongue in cheek because I really do value the skills and experience I gained from studying political science. But yes, it's not the sort of course that has a defined career path laid out like a law degree does. It depends on what you want to get from your university experience.

You had a sausage in bread. You didn't buy or have three people in t-shirts and aprons, a Weber, fifteen large packets of those shit $2 sausages, and a bunch of 70 cent black-and-gold white bread. You didn't buy the gas bottle.

We don't have a two party system though. The liberals and ALP just have the most voter traction and have conned minnow parties into alliances that keep them in power.

Our system of government was created so that parties could be swapped out based on what the people wanted. A lot of people still see the smaller parties as radical edges of either side of politics, and since their votes typically go to the Libs or labor anyway it's a mute point. However if someone created a party and it gained enough traction to govern in its own right then legally they would be able to.

It's just the political scene now a days makes it very unlikely that a party will ever gain enough traction to govern, and even if they do the major parties have the power to absorb their votes.

I actually started typing 'hotdog' and then changed my mind because I figured 'hotdog' was too American. It seems you're right and I should've typed 'sausage in bread'.

EDIT: On second thoughts, sausage sizzle is an acceptable term for 'a barbecued sausage, served in a single slice of bread', especially in WA, so **** it, I stand by sausage sizzle.

The right people at the right time will be able to do it. Canada has it, although their Conservatives still lean a bit too much towards so-called economic conservativism rather than focussing on conservatism's actual strengths. Europe is seeing swathes of conservatives and socialists come through the political duopolies. A Trump/Sanders/Bloomberg in the US presidentia race will also help. Essentially, there will come a breaking point at which there is total frustation either from conservatives or socialists (the former is more likely) at the major parties' unstoppable march towards liberalism that they will form a new party that will gain traction and keep it.
