Probably not a necessary thread but hey it's the off season
I noticed a lot of debate over certain players so this is the place to argue and have on record whether a player is gonna make it or not
I think the main ones are

L.Dunn
D.Kent
D.Terlich
N.Jetta
J.Strauss

Then the next tier of
S.Blease
M.Jones
J.Watts
J.Fitzpatrick

For mine
Terlich is a star an deserves no doubting of his place at all
And Dunn is a solid player who is still underrated
Kent will make it

Yup, I agree with what you say about terlich, dunn and Kent. I'm really hoping for the best with Jetta, but if he can't show his wares under Roos, then he does have to go, I just really hope he goes BANG under Roos.

Strauss is one I think definitely has the talent, but not sure about his desire. Could just be that he was overlooked, then his attitude dropped and the snowball effect happened and got offside with Neeld, but i don't know. I just don't see Strauss going far with us.

Heard alot about Blease. Seems people think he is on the chopping block and if he has another year like the last couple he'll be gone. That'd be a shame. I hope he pulls through.

I'm curious about how Watts is going and will go. I'm still not sure what Tasmanlvr meant by "Watts had Roosy". We all know Jack's super talented, but I think we all just wanna see him tackle and REALLY tackle, none of this half arsed BS.

Honestly. I'm a massive fan of Jetta, knowing the Jetta family quite well. I really hope he makes it. His pace isn't bad, neither is his lateral movement and let's not forget about some of the hits we've seen Jetta lay even at top level. Although he may not have the most disposals a game his skills are absolutely outstanding and of what disposals he does get they are usually contested. Although someone said that Disposal efficiency is an over rated statistic (due to hand balling to someone under pressure or kicks not being penetrating enough) I can agree but it shows the skill is evidently there and talent as well. Now all it takes is someone to teach him the ways of the game and how to be more effective with his great disposal efficiency and skill. And fortunate enough if Roos does choose to spend some time with Jetta which I think he will find some interest in because I think Jetta resembles that of Jarred Crouch. And I think roos highly rates players like that. So HOPEFULLY he can greatly improve this year or he will face the axe.

whether a player is gonna make it or not

L.Dunn. 10 year player. ppl still wondering. No. list clogger.
D.Kent. Yes. Like Andy Mac said. Plenty of guts.
D.Terlich. Yes. Needs to improve defensively but will back him to be a good role player.
J.Watts. Yes. Think he needs real self belief. Exterior confidence has always been a front.
N.Jetta. No. Not good enough
J.Strauss. No. Not good enough
S.Blease. No. We do need his pace but don't think he'll ever get AFL fit.
M.Jones. No. Gets 20 without really ever looking dangerous.
J.Fitzpatrick. No. gut feel says he doesn't have the football smarts to go the next level.

Of your list, I feel that Kent, Dunn, Watts and Fitzpatrick will show enough to be in the starting 22 at end 2014. Like to see Terlich keep his spot as well and one day see Blease put in a string of consistent games (befitting his low draft pick status).

L.Dunn. Yes.id like to see him spend more in the midfield as the big body run with tagger
D.Kent. No. State level footballer
D.Terlich. Yes. Needs to improve defensively, and can turn it over but that's probably more a reflection of the pressure he was under.
J.Watts. Yes. Looking forward to see him flourish under Roos stewardship.im tipping a breakout year for JW
N.Jetta. No chance. Love the endeavour, but that's not enough at this level
J.Strauss. No. Sadly.
S.Blease. Yes. Provided he puts in the work to build an AFL tank.
M.Jones. No. Just don't think he has the class to make it once we move up the ladder.
J.Fitzpatrick. Yes. Always really rated Fitz, and the sub rule as really brought the Fitz type into fashion. Good mark, and provided he can work on his kicking. He could really be our own David Hale.

What a lot of these guys are facing now is genuine competition. Take Strauss, under Roos he could go up a notch like any other player (and I expect him to) but if he gets crowded out for senior air time he's in trouble come end of year. At least 3 must go every year. This is the year to stand out or get taken by the flood.

Find it amazing that you think Kent won't make it but are willing to give Blease and Fitzpatrick time to improve their glaring deficiencies, they have had ample time to build tanks and improve kicking whereas Kent has been in the system for one pre season.
How long do we continue to wait for blokes to measure up, I would think if Blease or Fitzpatrick (or others ) do not show something soon, their respective papers may be stamped.
I think Kent is worth investing time in as he is a scrapper who knows the value of hard work, Blease has not shown a willingness for any type of work, and Fitzpatrick while being a great athlete for his size, has no footy smarts what so ever.

Completely agree with you regarding Kent but i must say that I found Fitzy a revelation last year which in reality was his first real season. I think that he has much upside to offer us and I would not discount a 200cm player quite so readily.

It's been ages since I've seen a game (obvs) so the following is based on gut feeling/personal bias/vendettas:

L.Dunn - Just about run his course. He plays a role for us, but his brainfades often cost us. Might be his last season.
D.Kent - Need to see more of him before making a judgement. Don't think he'll ever set the world on fire. Fringe 22, I'd say.
D.Terlich - Should be able to hold down the small backman role.
N.Jetta - Don't think he'll ever be consistent enough to make big impacts. Was given a lifeline this year.
J.Strauss - Tough gig playing in the backline but I've never seen him string together good consecutive games. Probably his last season. It's a shame because he's well liked on here.
S.Blease - Who knows? Needs to work defensively big time. I have a feeling his style of play will have to change under Roos, or he won't get a game.
M.Jones - Will probably be a victim of our increased midfield stocks. Did an admirable job for us during our annus horribilis.
J.Watts - Yeah I think he'll be fine. Basing this on the fact that I want him to succeed. I think he improved this year and with better players around him I think he'll start to hit his straps. Also should be starting to reach some sort of mental maturity (i.e. used to AFL pace and pressure).
J.Fitzpatrick - Really can't say. He was good for us at times and a dead weight at others. The fact he can go forward makes him an attractive option, but do we really need another tall forward?

L.Dunn - I've been one of the few people who liked him last year, but he's really holding down a spot for a couple of years until somebody better comes along.

D.Kent - Looked good in the second half of the year

D.Terlich - Good 2013 in a shithouse team but I'm not entirely sold on him being part of a successful side. Will definitely get the chance to solidify his spot this year.

N.Jetta - Highly unlikely, but worthwhile having around as a rookie for a couple of years as a filler player

J.Strauss - Don't hold out much hope here. Has looked good a couple of times, and he did have terrible luck with that injury but he's a bit parts player at the moment.

S.Blease - Needs to find a position. He was a good goal kicking half-forward in 2012 then they tried to play him in the middle this year and he looked like he CBF chasing or tackling. Has still got something to offer forward but not holding my breath on him as a midfielder

M.Jones - I reckon he's in big trouble. His first half of the year was good before he faded away a bit, and high finish in the B&F or not we're suddenly loaded with midfielders who (on paper) should be good so I think he'll drop back into the rotation

J.Watts - I'd have said absolutely as a forward based on his games against the Bulldogs last year when he got some decent service but god only knows what's going to happen to him if they start trying to make him a midfielder.

J.Fitzpatrick - Good on him for doing it, but I can't believe he re-signed for us so hastily. I can't see him being the second ruckman when Jamar goes, so that leaves him in a battle royale with Clark and Hogan (+ Dawes, Howe, Watts etc..) for tall forward spots. If he has an agent he should have been on the phone to Carlton or somebody else who needs a forward desperately. Mind you, knowing us everyone will go down injured ten minutes in.

Guys I'm happy you stuck on topic but feel free to throw in tappy, spencer or anyone who is fringe

Just a place to make calls on players and have it stuck in writing

Like for instance I still have faith in tappy making it just needs to get more footy

Bail?

I Like Tappy, Love how he hits hard, but his skills still need work. Got a decent kick on him, but IMO it's all about his decision making. Hopefully the change in coaching staff gets a few of these underachievers we seem to have into shape and they become solid, dependable contributors.

L.Dunn: Yes. The fact that he's been on the list for 10 years tells me he has made it. Played well in a BP last year and was tremendous 1 vs 1, this or next will probably be his last season though as he gets pushed out.

D.Kent: Maybe. Liked what I saw, but he was very selfish for a player who does lack the goal nous of a real small forward pocket. A bit like Shannon Byrnes, but needs to redistribute his weight to have a good career.

D.Terlich: Tentative yes, because players like him have fooled us before. A case of the second year-blues beckons even at his age, but I think he has the qualities you want in a medium defender.

N.Jetta: Nope. Won't play much this season. Simply isn't good enough.

J.Strauss: Nope. Doesn't get enough of the ball, isn't as damaging as he could be. Future, if he has one, lies on a wing.

S.Blease: Maybe. Like to think yes, but the clock is ticking for him to pull his finger out.

M.Jones: Maybe. Liked what I saw this year, but he's in our bottom 4 when/if all are firing. However, if all don't fire - his commitment will keep him a favourite. Don't discount him, because when the rose tinted glasses come off re. Bernie Vince (he's literally a less damaging, little more consistent, Sylvia clone) - we'll crave a more commited type.

J.Watts: He'll play for the next 8 years, so I guess it's a yes. The question is where he plays, and to what standard. Interested to see him in the midfield group.

J.Fitzpatrick: Yes. I think he's shown enough to be a meat & potato forward with a bit of speed on the side. Should be played out of the goal square, and fighting for the third tall spot with Dawes.

I think people forget that Dean Kent is the same age as Toumpas and Viney. Everyone on this board speaks about him as though he's the same age and as mature as Terlich and Jones.

Dean Kent is 19 years old! I think he showed enough for an 18 year old player last season to not need to be discussed in this thread, though I understand why he is.

No one is forgetting his age. If he was 26 and played and presented as he did he'd have been Relton Roberts v2.0....

No mention of Tapscott?

Terrific first game, not much seen since then... doesn't seem to have a spot in the side... big body, long kick, hard at it but injury prone... from what i can gather he is having yet another pre-season in he rehab group...
