Can anyone find a colour picture of the jumper Glenelg wore in the 1973 Champions of Australia game v Richmond? Because of their similar jumpers Glenelg wore a gold one which was likened to that worn by Wolverhampton Wanderers(at that time an English first division football team). I have found a youtube video but it does not express how awful that jumper was as the video is in black and white.

The Brisbane situation was still buffoonery. The word is that they wanted to replace the Lion (Sidebar: over photocopied, good observation. Since they changed back they now consider it sacred apparently, even though it clearly needs refurbishment ala Villa, Chelsea's heraldic figures) to just the Paddlepop head on the jumper, but the focus groups were all "where's the lion?"

So they added the gigantic body and there you have it. Far inferior to the roys lion anyway, no matter how jaggy it is. It's still one of the best logos in oz sport.

I reckon Brisbane's downfall in introducing the Paddle Pop Lion was the scale. It was just so damn huge that it completely dominated the design, consuming other strong elements like the straight yoke and the majority maroon base. If they had made the new lion in proportion with the original, and kept everything else the same, they would've got away with it in my opinion and it would still be on their jumpers today.

People don't like dramatic change. Slowly slowly catchee monkey.

Positives of the Fitzroy lion:
  • Historically relevant, keeps Fitzroy base happy
  • Threepeat jumper
  • One of the best looking logos/jumpers in the league
Positives of Paddlepop:

It was just dumb from every point of view.

Couldn't agree more. I'm just saying that they would've gotten away with the change (albeit a bad one) if they didn't supersize the lion like a Power Rangers villain before the traditional cardboard city fight scene.

Wolves were wearing this at the time.

So I would say the reference was much about the Gold Black Gold look as the actual colour.
Although if it was listed as Gold, most manufacturers would have used the same dye, which was the same as the Australian Rugby team wore, and therefore the match up would have looked like this:

Which is not all that different from the jumpers the Australian All Stars wore the year before in Exhibition games against Carlton, the Champions of Australia

Is that what happened?

I can't think of another example of such buffoonery ever - Brisbane's move to the paddlepop laan doesn't count because the 'original lion' looks like a piece of over-photocopied shit and needed to be overhauled, they just went about it the wrong way.

What is even more wonderful is the original 'Bears logo', which is actually a Koala.

The 'Paddlepop Lion' jumper is a great example of what happens when you employ people full time in a marketing department and give them a budget. The imperative to do something means you always risk that sort of overthought, undercooked nonsense. Between Port Power FC Est. 1996, the funk squad, the floating fist and 101 crap clash guernseys amongst many other balls ups, we should know. Thankfully, we have got more right than wrong lately.

Yeah things have been very good on this front for a while now.

The only recent missteps I can think of are the decibel meter and Kochie's awkward pitch invasion with the Farriss brothers.

On a side note, Graham still looks ugly in a full gold guernsey with a pixelated face.
