What's the etiquette with tradesmen when they give you a quote but you don't want to go ahead with them? Do you just not bother telling them?

depends on how much work they did for your quote and how big the job is. if i turned up and quoted on the spot i never really expected to hear back from anyone, and if i didn't really want the job just quoted stupidly high anyway.

if they've done a lot of work and research and got back to you with a detailed quote, or if its a big job, I'd appreciate a heads up so i know i don't need to keep space free for work ive quoted and haven't heard back from yet.

What if you think they're a bit dodgy?

This guy gave us a quote for 19k.

When I asked him if he will be taking out warranty insurance, he sort of just looked at me and then asked what that was and advised he had never heard of that before.

Neither had I:

Just text him and say thanks for the quote but you won't be going ahead with it. I have heard tradies complain that they spent time on quoting, but that's just part of doing business. They could just say "that's three hours of quoting work for which my rate is $x per hour, which is taken off the price of the job if you go ahead with it".

if he said hes got no idea what warranty is i wouldnt bother with the guy. just sounds like issues down the track.

a builder must have building insurance for all jobs over 16k, and covers you for a range of things during the build and up to six years after completion for structural defects. a lot of your questions might be answered here -

if the guy doesnt have a building license, dont hire them. its only 19k so i wouldnt worry too much about letting him know

That’s what a lot of people I deal with do. A courtesy call or text is all that’s needed.

Yeah common courtesy is overrated.....
Lol, the number of times tradies don't show up or don't respond to phone calls is amazing. Sucks for the good ones that are diligent, but there is a big problem with courtesy and customer service in the industry.

I am all over it cos it's the field I work in.

It was the big red flag when he said he had never heard of it.

He gave us a pretty reasonable quote given the amount of work, but the no warranty thing is why we won't pursue.

Left voicemails and texts for fencers, no reply. Twits.

Just because you have had a bad experience with one group of people doesn't mean you should treat the remainder of the group poorly.

There's good and bad people in every profession.

a mate of mine used to be a fencer, quite a few years ago now. got sent out to a job one day to rip down a fence with a few guys, then around noon a truck would turn up and drop the timber off for the new fence and take the old one away. gets a phone call at about quarter past 12 from the truck driver asking where everyone was and why the fence hadnt been taken down yet.

turns out they had gone to a very similar sounding street in the same suburb, went to the number house they had and ripped down the fence at some random guys house who wasnt home. truck turned up, they loaded up the old fence and just bailed.

the moral of the story - fencers are morons

two wrongs dont make a right - treat others how you want to be treated....not hard to message and say 'i wont be engaging you for the work quoted, thanks'
