Anyone else struggle to call in sick?
Many people I know will happily throw 4-5 sickies a year.

I’ve had 3 sick days in the last 4 years, and they were back to back because I genuinely had Influenza A. I’ve been at my current job for 12 months and haven’t used any personal leave. Outside of that, I very rarely get sick.

Friends and family tell me to take mental health days to use them up because you can’t take them with you, but I can’t do it, feel too guilty.

Well my work is a shitshow at the moment (long story but we're all very disengaged). But generally I don't take them, I don't know, i feel like with WFH I don't need to.

I do about 1-2 sickies a year when I'm not sick. No extra work to come back to and I absolutely need a break from the kids sometimes.

Its not like I go out of the apartment and go to the movies when I do this..

Can attest to the above, for example if I take annual leave I’m still monitoring my phone the entire time and replying to anything urgent.

If I wake up with a head ache or something I will just start work with the intent to call in sick a few hours later, but never do as I’ll be a few hours in and just push through.

Projects never stop until completion, so the time you have off just leads to more shit to catch up on.

God damn it people. Your own health, physical and mental, is infinitely more important than your job. Realise you're just a number to them and stop the loyalty. Use the days your entitled to. **** em.

I used to feel guilty, then I realised what do I actually get for having all this sick leave? Nothing.

I enjoy my current job a lot, and I have a lot of leave, but with a little one it's always handy to have a lot because you never when they're going to get sick or how long for.

I was sick I think once last year, and then I wasn't feeling 100% late last year one day so I just took the day and it helped me a lot.

There's nothing more important than yourself.

Ah I have it a bit different to most, if I'm getting cranky at work my boss will give me two days off on the house so I don't burn out. So I don't really need to use my sick days I suppose.

My leave isn't great and I tend to use it all up. I get 5 sick days and 2 personal days. A couple of those days are usually used for when kids are sick but often I'll just work from home if that's the case.

And it's your leave so I think you can use it how you want. If you need a mental health break and want to play golf or go to the movies I don't think that's an issue. Better than burning out.

How much annual leave do you get?

The reason I love being on casual employment is not having to deal with taking sickies and applying for holidays.

As usual it's the good workers that cop the flack for calling in sick.

A slack worker or a worker no one likes calls in sick and no cares or raises an eyebrow.

That kind of worker took a sickie every week for 3 months, I asked if he was asked to get a doctors certificate and he said no.

I take one sickie in 6 months and was asked for a doctors certificate.

I worked my way to 50 sick days so I could have a lot up my sleeve in case of an extended illness or injury. Once I got to 50 though I started using them and regularly take a mental health day now. I took the day off on Monday so I could watch the Super Bowl.

I just looked at my payslip. I have 221 days of sick/personal leave.
44 weeks.
Guess should I need extended time off for illness i am set.
I do have income protection insurance through my super but i think before they pay you need to exhaust all your own leave (?). Maybe i should extend that period in my super and drop my premium.

Something to look into

I knew a guy would be right on top of his sickies.
As soon as he clocked one up he'll would take a day off.

I broke my ankle playing footy had six weeks of sick leave.

Worked at one place for over 3 years had 1 of sick.

Working at this current place had one day of sick.
In nearly 2years.

It's true you can't cash them in .
Even if I took 20 cents on the dollar on my sick balance I would make megga bucks.

With mine it only kicks in three months after you've been off work.

Yeh mine kicks in after 90 days but i wonder if in fine print it says and also only if recipient’s own paid leave is exhausted.
