Yeah that's gyprock. You can get heavier graded wall mates but because its not in a stud most the time its going to drop, even the shelf itself will strain the screws in the wall.
****ing arseh*le box said "can be used without studs" ****ing shit.
So if we got one of these things at the bottom (but obviously not as ****ing ugly) will it work or should I just go **** myself?

That's what everyone is telling me now
I just trusted the instructions on the box

That's poor form from the manufacturers, they're shelves so they're going to have weight on them and imo will have to be screwed into the studs.

Thankfully my gf's dad can just about fix anything/do anything which is incredibly handy.

Also have neighbours who are good with that stuff. Got two quite large frames up in my room which they hoped with cos I am useless :D

What's the go? You've got a steel frame/bracket that you slide the shelf over? How long is it?
Yeah there's a bracket we screwed onto the wall first, using the little wall mate doovalackies. It's probably half the length of the shelf and sits in the middle of it.

Fuuuu...we've trashed the boxes too so can't even take them back.

Try and find the studs (just youtube how to) and see if you can put them somewhere else in the house? Or just take away HBF's man card and call Hire a Hubby.

How long is your shelf. You should pick 1 stud up or maybe 2 using those brackets. Like its said below 450mm or 600mm is the usual distances. measure from a corner of the room and tap on the wall. should give you an indication on how far apart they are and if they will be in the area you need them to be.

Attention all Handymen!
So we bought some floating shelves from Bunnings and have installed them as per instructions, but as soon as I put anything on the shelf it starts to come away from the wall at the top. I take everything off (and by 'everything' I mean I've put a vase, a candle and a photoframe on it to test it) and the screws seem to come loose as soon as I slide the shelf onto the bracket.

What am I doing wrong? Pls respond.

Have you screwed it into the studs?

Have you screwed the shelf into the bar from underneath?

Also depending where I placed mine I was able to get at least 1 of the spots on a stud, the rest just in those plaster screws and mine are holding up fine, they have plenty of weight on them too.

Yep.

We're just gonna take 'em down, patch and paint the wall, and put them back up on some ******* studs...which will mean they're off-centre but apparently I don't have a choice.

Another option would be to get a thin piece of timber the length of the shelves, paint it the same or very similar colour, and screw that into every stud you can along the way, then screw the bracket into the timber. You'd only need timber 10-20mm thick. Would add shelf space too!
