Under 10 overs and Powell it was all over. I don't want to Harper on about it but this wasn't the Windies Best display and will leave them feeling quite Sobers, I had sat down Holding a Gibbs pie topped with some Dujon mustard hoping for an even contest but Starc became King for a day with performance which should see him nominated for a Logie.
The fremantle Doctor didn't have an opportunity to blow a Gayle to help the tourists but Bravo to Glen Maxwell for his fine unbeaten 51 in quick time.
Little to Garner out of this game for the West indies other than debutant Jason Holder who wound down with a strong cup of Cuffy.
Did that take long? However long, you will never get that part of your life back again.

Steve Waugh and (early) Ricky Ponting led Aussie teams say hi.

From 1980 to 1995 the West Indies were undefeated in Test Series with a record of 20-9-0.

Across a similar span between reclaiming the Ashes in 1993 and losing to India in 2008, Australia amassed a series record of 41-5-7.

Not forgetting winning 16 tests in a row.

Twice.

15 years undefeated is a record for any sport world wide. Those West Indian teams, in particular under Clive Lloyd, can not only lay claim to being the greatest cricket team of all time but arguably the greatest, most dominant sporting team the world has ever seen.

They were awesome and they didn't consistently lose "dead rubbers" like the Aussies did. Their dominance didn't end when they had a series wrapped up.

The West Indies completely dominated in an era when every single test nation was highly competitive. Test cricket was arguably at it's peak throughout the 70's and 80's. Fundamental laws of the game were changed to quell their dominance!

Waugh and Ponting's Australian's dominated through an era of Test Cricket world wide being in decline, where very few nations could even justify being worthy of a 5 Test series. India were possibly the only other decent Test playing country during that period. Jason Gillespie got a Test double-hundred FFS!

England were good enough to kick our arses in the 1980's with guys like Botham and Gower, by the time we started dominating they were continually wheeling out shit that would've struggled to get a Shield game.

Pakistan were highly formidable, particularly for that period in the late-80's to early-90's. What Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were bowling was absolutely fearsome.

Thats simply not true. Australia were shit from 83-90 inclusively and we beat England in that time. Don't forget New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan were seven different shades of shit during this period of dominance as well.

Not disputing that but how many series did we have against the "minnows"? You can only beat who you play so both teams had that advantage. I'm not saying the Australian teams were better, far from it but don't downplay what they achieved during our period of dominance. We remember the West Indies fondly because they dominated playing an incredibly attractive style of cricket and they had an air of the "untouchable" about them. We called that arrogance when our blokes became the best.

I don't completely disagree. Australia was still recovering from the scars left by World Series Cricket during the 80's and those affects were pretty far reaching. Similarly, the West Indies had defections to rebel tours of South Africa, something that caused a major ruckus in West Indian cricket, yet they still dominated.

I'm not trying to necessarily downplay the achievements of the Australian's. They were undoubtably one of the greatest sides ever. But i'll maintain that the West Indies dominated for a longer period and in a much healthier era for test cricket. There also seemed to be this endless supply of players, particularly bowlers, that you just thought was never going to end. Roberts retires, Marshall steps in. Holding retires, Ambrose picks up the slack. Whereas the Australian's dominance was based more around keeping a certain group of individuals fit and together. Take Warne and McGrath out and there wasn't an aweful lot of similar quality to go to. Warne was a freak though.

Slightly off the point but the West Indies endeared themselves to the world much more than the Australians did. Their so-called "arrogance" was more of a natural swagger then anything and their behavior was exemplary. They intimidated using bat and ball as opposed to Steve Waugh's brand of "mental disintigration" (sledging).

Thats racist.

White men can't swagger.

I also loved the fact Viv never, ever wore a helmet, always the cap. Standing there, casually chewing his gum, almost goading bowlers to aim at his head.

Still my favourite cricketer.
