I want to get the infa-red ones I heard they are the way to go...I dont mind dropping the cash but I need to know which brands are respected...Some of the more pricey telescopes comes with software in which you hook your laptop up to the scope, and it will get the GPS location you are at, and then it will adjust the telescope to the locations of any given planet etc for viewing. It's really great stuff. In terms of actually seeing Jupiter, it would be due to the light from the sun passing through the gasses giving them luminescence. Similarly to how water spray shines in the sun here on earth.

I get the water inference but water is a visible liquid and can be seen especially when compacted eg earth..
but the gases are not visible even when compacted or we would see them in our atmospere eg oxygen
Hmm I pretty sure it comes from the sunlight spectrum hence blue pink purple green orange skiesGas is visible! The sky is blue, and that's why- you're seeing the atmosphere. The sunlight hits the atmosphere and illuminates it. You don't see the atmosphere at night because there's no sunlight to illuminate it.
I'm suffereing a severe attack of telescope envy, btw.

Its not bettered is only an opinion... it holds as much scientific weight as any religion or aliens brought us here...

So oxygen is visible in a different spectrum of light? Sorry mate just a little confused by what your sayingWhat we see is a spectrum created by the refraction in the wavelengths of light as they pass through a medium, or element. Some produce light outside of the spectrum that is visible to the naked eye, while others are visible (ROYGBIV). The dispersion is measureable, even when the wavelengths are not within our visible range, and can be used to determine what elements are prevalent. This is how they can tell what the Sun, planets atmospheres and gas clouds comprise of.

ok this does make sense now to the visibility of jupiterThat's my understanding, yes.
If a ray of light passed through Oxygen it's wavelength will be slightly altered. Googling refraction of light should give you some answers.
Which bring us back to redshift and the Big Bang...

Still not convinced about the dark sky yet mainly because so many mixed theories
Are there monsters under your bed?
Is that the real issue?

Still got a discussion about the sky being dark though .....I just looked out the window and the sky is definitely dark. 8pm here.
Trust me on this one.

jupiter and uranus I believe is made of hydrogen and helium right down to the core which are both colourless and transparent if you say that it gains a spectrum because of gravity well I dont see how but I guess it plausible
