Jeez, you guys have some great taste, any of the top fives could easily have been my own. Here's my top 5 currently:

The Big Lebowski - so damn quotable and the dialogue in the bowling alley is some of the best, but that's just like, my opinion, man.
Grizzly Man - arrghh this documentary, is it a black comedy? Makes me laugh anyway, well not so much how it ends
Blue Velvet - ...
Anchorman - saw it at the end of a movie marathon and instantly loved it
Glengarry Glen Ross - great dialogue, beautiful monologue from Alec Baldwin

Killer movies that I've either watched too much and ruined or need some more watches to make the list:
The Watchmen
Pulp Fiction
There Will Be Blood (I drink your milkshake)
Back to the Future II
Full Metal Jacket
Blue Valentine (dreamy Gossling plus Tom Waits reference = sploodge)
Terminator I and II
Old Boy (Korean version or GTFO) also the other Sympathy movies
PeeWee's Big Adventure (don't watch while high, or do, that's up to you, man)
No Country for Old Men
Dawn of the Dead
The Godfather
Goodfellas

On the watchlist - keen on some advice as to whether (based on the above) you think I'll enjoy:
2001 Space Odyssey
Labyrinth
Inland Empire
Casablanca
To Kill a Mockingbird
Amadeus
Citizen Kane
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Keen on any recommendations on anything pre-1990s, obscure or foreign language, let me know and I might even briefly review it on here if anyone's interested.

Nice work, Comettski_1

I'm a huge David Lynch fan but never been able to make it through Inland Empire.

The rest are great.

Johnny Stecchino (1991) is an Italian comedy starring Roberto Benigni (of Life is Beautiful fame). Might not be everyone's cup of tea but I found it hilarious.

That's okay, because so am I.

Donnie Darko appears to have been a fluke, though.

The Box wasnt bad. Didnt like Southland Tales though.

Thanks mango, jeez a David Lynch fan and not being able to sit through it. I think I'd be the same way judging by the synopsis, I've been trying to psyche myself up for it for months.

Did you like Wild at Heart? Love that film, "You'll hear the deep sound comin' down from Bobby Peru" haha.

It's now on the list. I haven't explored many foreign language comedies so it will be a good test, will let you know how I go.

I wouldn't consider these obscure, although some might, but Japanese director Akira Kurosawa has made some great movies which are both foreign and pre-1990s. My favourites are Seven Samurai (you may have seen the Hollywood version called The Magnificent Seven), Ikuru, Kagemusha and Ran.

I'd probably actually rate it pretty low in Lynch's filmography but the scene you quoted is utterly amazing.

Ooh yep, heard of Seven Samurai and Ran, it's so hard to find the time and concentration for epics. I'll make an effort to watch them.

That scene, plus Nic Cage, the Snakeskin Jacket, the feel of the movie. I've seen it a couple of times and enjoyed it but agree it's not the best.

Love or hate Lynch, you can't deny his ability to get the most out of borderline average actors - Laura Dern, Dennis Hopper, Kyle MacLachlan, Cage, Dafoe all gave their best performances under his direction. Isabella Rossellini possibly being an exception although I think a fair bit of criticism comes from her singing in Blue Velvet, although to be honest I don't think it matters.

1. Arrogant
2. Cheerful
3. Weepy
4. Grouchy
5. Outraged

Not top 5 of all time, but top 5 movies watched without getting too bored..

- District 9
- Oldboy
- Anchorman
- Terminator 2
- Shawshank Redemption

Yes!!!! + Fallen Angels & Chungking Express.

I need to sit down and watch his movies properly as an adult. I remember a few of his movies because my parents watched them, but didn't pay enough attention since I thought they were shitty romance movies etc.

I attribute a lot of the good things in his movies to Christopher Doyle, his cinematographer, so I'd like to see how his latest movie looks.
