HERP DERP STALIN.
Only 8% of Australians attend church at least once a month, of this a huge amount will be old people about to die and if you have been to a Catholic Church lately they will likeLY be Vietnamese, not to mention the large proportion who are pro gay marriage.

To blame religion or the religious for any policy is just a lie that is not borne by statistical truths. That's not to say that many don't pretend that their bigotry has a deeper reasoning.

It's a red herring.

Part of the issue in America is that it's an undemocratic decision, there has been no majority vote on it in many places where it has been put to vote.

Who cares? The supreme court has found that restriction of marriage rights violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

LOL you're right, religion is completely innocent in the issue of persecution on the basis of sexuality. :drunk:

Personally I don't.
But that's not really how democracy is supposed to,work. Unfortunately democracy does not neccesarily protect minorities by its very nature.

It's overstated as the stats provide. Anglicanism has had gay priests for a while now, we all know how forgiving Catholicism is of sexual indiscretion.
Homophobia is NOT a religious issue and you are giving people an out by suggesting it is. Fewer than 8% of the country are even remotely religious, don't be stupid and make out that they have held sway.
Those making homophobic comments down Hindley street or at the footy etc. aren't Christians they are your typical Aussie person.

I think you're thinking of utilitarianism, not democracy. In any case the 14th amendment was ratified by a democratically elected government in 1868.

Saying religion is a major cause of homophobia =/= saying a certain religion directly influences homophobic people to be so today.

These things have been ingrained in our culture by religion and religious institutions for millennia. Gimme a break.

I completely agree with the decision, but states have regularly voted against it. The interpretation of the 14th Amendment isn't that straightforward, hence the time it has taken to happen.

The 14th was forced on states (for good reason) and is patchily enacted and has been so for the whole time.

Bollox have they, your average bloke isn't homophobic because the bible or his priest has said so, he's homophobic because he fears the unknown, the same reason he is racist, sexist etc. blaming religion is a nice little safety valve for people who think humans are inherently good...we aren't.

There was never a pre religious utopia of tolerance.

I don't give a fat rats clacker about gay marriage - good on em I say:thumbsu: I must admit that I could watch 2 girls getting up close and personal with each other all day but as soon as I see two fellas show any sign of affection towards each other I avert my eyes and start doing my times tables.

And? It's still completely wrong to say that this decision is undemocratic.

I reckon I might watch Q & A to see some serious backpedaling followed by some sanctimonious dribble.

I actually don't understand what your question (are we?) is even responding to in my post

The notion that religion is holding us back, is the be all end all of social intolerance toward equal marriage, and acceptance as a whole.

I concur the religios lobby groups have the political power, but your average person in the street, is more like what Chigwi has articulated better than I.

He articulated something? o_O

I asked Brian Houston to come in here and make a comment he said he'd get back to me, he's so busy he needs to cash a check from Gloria Jeans then ride his Harley Fatboy down from his mansion to his Bondi beach-house before 6pm tsk tsk the lords work is never done.

baffles me why any living breathing thing wants to get married

Yep, im all for equality and so in the spirit of fairness i think the right thing to do is ban hetro marriage, surely in this day and age you dont need some silly ceremony and the rest of the rubbish that goes with it. its a hoax, some people i know are in the best reltionships, been together 40 years but arent married, is their relationship of any less value to someone who decided in their early 20s that they had to get married due to fairytales & shit.... too many disney movies and happilly ever after rubbish. its a scam, ban it all. bang whoever you want, stay as a couple for ever, swing, sneak over to the neighbours house while he is at work, have mass orgies do whoever you want, but dont get married, probably the single most pointless trivial thing we humans do....
