They aren't the reason gay marriage has been held back. They wouldn't even give a shit about the sacredness of marriage if they were really atheists. There are plenty of homophobic atheists. It's not a religious disease.

What have atheists done to influence policy in a negative way?
Only 8% of Australians attend church at least once a month, of this a huge amount will be old people about to die and if you have been to a Catholic Church lately they will likeLY be Vietnamese, not to mention the large proportion who are pro gay marriage.HERP DERP STALIN.
Part of the issue in America is that it's an undemocratic decision, there has been no majority vote on it in many places where it has been put to vote.

To blame religion or the religious for any policy is just a lie that is not borne by statistical truths. That's not to say that many don't pretend that their bigotry has a deeper reasoning.
It's a red herring.

Personally I don't.Who cares? The supreme court has found that restriction of marriage rights violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.
It's overstated as the stats provide. Anglicanism has had gay priests for a while now, we all know how forgiving Catholicism is of sexual indiscretion.LOL you're right, religion is completely innocent in the issue of persecution on the basis of sexuality.![]()
Personally I don't.
But that's not really how democracy is supposed to,work. Unfortunately democracy does not neccesarily protect minorities by its very nature.
Those making homophobic comments down Hindley street or at the footy etc. aren't Christians they are your typical Aussie person.
I completely agree with the decision, but states have regularly voted against it. The interpretation of the 14th Amendment isn't that straightforward, hence the time it has taken to happen.I think you're thinking of utilitarianism, not democracy. In any case the 14th amendment was ratified by a democratically elected government in 1868.
Bollox have they, your average bloke isn't homophobic because the bible or his priest has said so, he's homophobic because he fears the unknown, the same reason he is racist, sexist etc. blaming religion is a nice little safety valve for people who think humans are inherently good...we aren't.Saying religion is a major cause of homophobia =/= saying a certain religion directly influences homophobic people to be so today.
These things have been ingrained in our culture by religion and religious institutions for millennia. Gimme a break.
You do know how the Supreme Court is made up don't you?5 votes to 4

The 14th was forced on states (for good reason) and is patchily enacted and has been so for the whole time.
Not really, sorryYou do know how the Supreme Court is made up don't you?
And? It's still completely wrong to say that this decision is undemocratic.
Depends on your definition of democracy. And? It's still completely wrong to say that this decision is undemocratic.
I actually don't understand what your question (are we?) is even responding to in my post
The notion that religion is holding us back, is the be all end all of social intolerance toward equal marriage, and acceptance as a whole.
I concur the religios lobby groups have the political power, but your average person in the street, is more like what Chigwi has articulated better than I.
Your bias doesn't allow you to ever see reason. He articulated something?![]()
baffles me why any living breathing thing wants to get married
