Just back to the grunge/alt rock thing for a second. This band band surely needs a mention:

And as for guitar solos well, if you don't like Freebird, then that's your problem. - edit: beaten to it

Maidens performance of Sign of the Cross at Rock in Rio is one of the all time best music performances ever.
I wouldn't know mate. Not an Iron Maiden fan, though no longer a hater as I used to be as a teen.

I do like this song though:

I try to battle against my prejudices. As a kid I hated rap or hip-hop on principle, and needed a group of white boys to convince me it could be pretty cool (The Beastie Boys). I later found out how much I was missing. I quite like it these days, though not an avid listener.

One of my biggest prejudices was against Rush. I hated those ridiculously big drums which for a Ramones fanatic always seemed so unnecessary. :D I tried to give them a chance last year but still not convinced. Maybe I listened to the wrong songs.

Rush are amazing.

Listen to any other prog? Dream Theater? Symphony X?

Rush and Ramones get an equal amount of air-time in my house.

Well, Rush at least have the best tv character ever as their biggest fan:

Not sure if you get Trailer Park Boys in Australia :D

The music snobbery of those who were into the 3 chord punk scene of the 80's I always find amusing and highly unjustified.

Musical snobbery is always justified.

Just ask a music snob.

You should never have to apologise for the style of music you like or the artists that perform it. That's why it's art - it's subjective to the taste of the individual.

I love modern abstract paintings because I feel a connection to the pure emotion of the piece without the need of the prison of form and structure...but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate other styles for their own unique beauty. When I was heavily into music, I had Strauss next to NWA, Minor Threat next to Rage Against the Machine and Metallica next to Primus.

When an artist performs a guitar solo at a live concert, it's akin to them painting a new version of the masterpiece they created. I don't want to see a band paint by numbers and perform exactly the same way as the album...surprise me by taking the structure and form of the song to create a new piece of art that only those that were there can purely appreciate.

I can't stand guitar wank. The ideal song length imo is around 30 seconds

I don't know about you, but I prefer 5 seconds.

A great guitar solo and pure wally wooftering are different things (insert a wally woofter)

Ok I'll insert one

Two things,

1. You are an art and music snob.
2. You have your records in the wrong order, obviously it should be Metallica, Minor Threat, NWA, Primus, RATM, Strauss. If they aren't in alphabetical order how are you supposed to find them?

Also it's weird that you only like music from bands/artists from the letter M onwards in the alphabet.

If you don't like 5 of those six I hate you!
