Every morning on my way home from work I pass the same people. I always give them a friendly smile and a hello which they return and if time permits I have brief chat with some of them. It's not exactly something I think about doing, it just kind of happens. I know my example isn't exactly much, but it makes me feel good and I'm pretty sure it does the same for most of the people I share it with.

So what I'd like to know is what are the simple things you do without a second thought that would brighten someone's day or even just make them smile? It can be as simple as holding a door or lift for someone, giving another passenger on the train your newspaper when you're finished, sharing your umbrella with some poor sod stuck in the rain, etc... Who knows, you might read something here, take it onboard and start doing it yourself. :)

SIMPLE THINGS - PAOLO NUTINI

If you love the life you live
Then you'll get a lot more done
Be more inclined to take the reins
Than turn away and run
It's very rare it seems to get a lifetime guarantee,
So I suppose self satisfaction be the key...

My father is a wealthy, self made man
But his wealth does not consist of riches or acres of land
Instead he has a family who are
His biggest fans
That's something that I one day hope to have.

So I'll cherish the simple things
The easy took for granted things
Like going round my Mum's house for my tea
And argue with my sister,
Only God knows how I missed her
It's the simple things that mean the most to me

Argh, he gets up each day at five
Starts the car and makes the drive
Shutters up, starts the fryers
Serves out food to all the buyers in the town
As they stand there in the same old line
Get there every day at the same old time
No, you never hear him grumble and groan
Cause they're the people in the line that he built it on
And like me he cherished the simple things
The easy took for granted things
Like going round his Mum's house for my tea
And argue with his sister,
Only God knows how he missed her
It's the simple things tha mean the most to... him

When you or someone else flashes their lights to warn you there is a speed camera ahead and then you pass them fine free...

Good Feeling :)

If I have a valid metlink ticket I will always pass it someone walking by...

This.

I was buying daily tickets and when I had finished my travels for the day, I always passed it on to someone at the bus-stop where I was getting off or if I wasn't getting the bus home, I'd find the best looking girl at the train station by the ticket machine and hand it to her.

in the city for a meeting a few eeks ago when the first of the bad storms hit. was wearing my best business suit so i ducked into 7/11 to buy a cheap umbrella for the walk back to the carpark. the walk was around 600metres. when i got to the carpark i picked out someone random on the street looking as if they were waiting for the rain to stop so i walked up and gave them the 5 minute, $9 umbrella. the look on their face made my drive home fantastic.
i have gone in and paid for a refuel at a service station for the person behind me before, around 3 years ago. i heard about this once and was feeling particularly generous and drove off without knowing their reaction. the servo guy looked at me like i was some type of space cadet.

I refuse to do this.
If you are speeding you deserve to get booked.

I work in the pub game and most days you'll get someone who comes into the pub, has one or two pots and then when you ask if they want another one they have that downtrodden look on their face, looking as some change thinking yeah i really want one but i've got no cash.

If i've been having a chat with them at the bar, or if they look like they have had a **** of a day i'll shout em one. Only a small thing but hey, it's something.
