Terrorism is still an insignificant danger to the average person in the Western world. You'll save more lives if you take more care crossing the road, fence your pool properly and vote for better mental health facilities.

This is such a "first world" response. Try taking your "fence your pool" strategy to the mothers of enslaved school-kids in Nigeria. Or the parents of murdered school-kids in Pakistan.

Regardless of the individual circumstances all these events are linked by a common ideology. That ideology is being exported here. Should it be ignored? Is that really your policy? "Let them have pool safety!"

It's hard to know where to begin with the poverty of such sentiments. Not least because they are so widely and blithely repeated.

More kids die in Pakistan from poor sanitation than from being hunted down and murdered at school by a large, well organised and fanatical internal insurgent force - how can they address the former while suffering the latter? But we have outdoor pools and they don't so * em...

The thing about Terrorism - its entire raison d'etre - is to cause fear and division. Pool gates and Road safety are individual choices. There's an obvious difference, right?

This is the thing: The Govt aren't trying to instill the population with fear. It's the complete opposite - they're terrified that if they don't stop terrorist attacks, the general population will turn on itself in an orgy of violence and retributive pogroms. Which is exactly what the terrorism is designed to achieve.

The other thing is: to this point, the terrorism has utterly failed. While immigration has become an issue across the Western World it's not been specific to Muslim immigrants, and there has been very little blowback against the muslim community as a whole.

But this is precisely because we have suffered a tiny tiny fraction of the murderous violence that has ripped Nigeria, Iraq and Pakistan apart.

The point is the IDEOLOGY is real. It's a threat. It won't just go away by better pool safety. It needs to be fought. It needs to be engaged. It needs to be defeated - by force when required but, more importantly, by REASON. By a united rejection of everything it stands for.

Or we could sneer and shrug and just build better pool fences...
