Another successful day from Bondy it would appear.....about the only news we got was that McPharlin would play on.

The other clubs must chuckle to themselves each year when they see Bondy enter Ethiad for trade talks......it is time we upgraded like when we got Lyon to take over from Harvey......Bondy has had his time, give him a project like picking a new song or something to do with Cockburn and lets get some talent in that has had success in garnishing trades in the past.

We made the grand final last year, what do you want him to do exactly?

The same as the other top 5 clubs and get players that address our weaknesses, i.e. tall forwards and defenders and contested midfield depth. The Hawks and Swans in particular have specifically identified their needs in the last two years and look how it has turned out.

Because Sydney has COLA and Hawks keep wining season after season.

Bond needs to learn hypnotism - or better yet, he needs to spend summer under the tutelage of some witch doctor overseas that specialise in mind manipulation.

The reality is that the reason why Sydney and Hawks have been successful in filling their needs is that players have actually WANTED TO GO THERE.

It goes beyond identifying a need, you can only try to make a play for players who are available to fill them. Bond would be crucified if we went back to the Schwabolly principles of trade and list management, but he also gets crucified for refusing to mortgage the future of the list for a perceived messiah who turns out to be a dud.

I think people who have lived through the "Messiah" trade days and how we manage our list these days should remember where doing the former left us and where this current approach has taken us. Not saying Bond has no faults, but the man can't be expected to work miracles.

Sydney picked up Tippett and Franklin for 2 million a year.
Geelong have Rivers and maybe Clark, that's a solid back and a very iffy forward.
Ryder could be out of the game but I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL give up a compensation pick to Port if he is banned.

Hawthorn and Geelong are losing their best players through age and expecting to replace them with youngsters, it doesn't happen. They will be West Coast Mk II, guns at both ends and an average midfield. Meanwhile we are sailing along with Fyfe, Sutty, Neale, Hill & anyone else we draft in the next four years.

If you can choose where to have your young ability it's always midfield.

Has there been much talk on here how we also missed out on Zaine Cordy and Jack Hiscocks*? Bulldogs matched our bid on Cordy and Sydney did so on Hiscocks. Just another swing and miss for our recruiters unfortunately.

*What a name!

The non-involved clubs are only at that meeting to, by force of selection, decide the value of the other club's father son picks.

Yes, but there was still a willingness to select those players to our club. I don't think they put a bid in simply to force the hand of the father-son club.

We won't be a destination club until we win our first premiership and/or remain consistently top 4 for a while yet. Success is still too new for players to have that association with Fremantle and quality that is worth the weekly flights, a potentially shorter career (tm), a higher cost of living without COLA support.

Yes, but you're still only going to offer what you think is fair value.

Well there has been no reports of him holding a gun to any players' head. So maybe he can do that.

I presume you were a fan of "get it done" Schwabby.

Face the reality mate, we are based on the other side of the world, exposing players to excessive travel, in a boring city and with widespread opinions that our window has passed. For those in Melbourne, they have many other teams to choose from. Why rip up your family and move interstate.

Look at West Coast. Same problem.

Yeah absolutely, but my initial comment was more about missing out players. Again. I know it's just the FS bidding but seems we're runner up too many times.

Agree. I also most of these players come at a price. Frawley would reduce our cap space by a big margin but if he performed then it would be a master stroke. Freo didn't get him and if they decided to up the contract it would could have been massive overs.

Backline KPP are not as bare as forward KPP for Freo as McPharlin looks to play on and Silvagni playing well when not injured. Good drafting like the one where Freo picked Neale and co could really help set Freo up for a number of years. The top teams rely on this most seasons and rarely get the opportunity to pick up young guns due to the fact they hardly finish out side the top 8. The pressure is on the selectors but that's nothing new for Geelong and Hawks.

in a boring city

According to who? There is plenty to do not just in Perth but also all along the coast. People who say it is boring without having ever been here or stayed here for more than 2-3 days are buying into a stupid stereotype.

I was joking. I think Bondy is doing a terrific job given the points you stated above. Aggressive approach to all players but not getting caught paying overs.

For the record, I hated Schwabby.

I have lived in Perth for quite a while, and Melbourne and Germany. I live in a small city of 150k here and there is a hell of a lot more going on than Perth. But hey thats my opinion.

Besides, we are trying to convince Eastern staters to move over. Their perception and stereotypes do matter/effect us.

Arguably - 9 other teams who bid also missed out on getting their man (like Melbourne who bid #2 on Heeney). Incidentally - Zaine Cordy was rated by some as being worth 2nd-3rd round, we bid a 4th round (good value pick) and it was matched by the dogs. Nothing wrong with missing out.

It's an interesting balance isn't it - top teams pick shrewdly and turn good talent into great, teams with poor development capabilities take great talent and achieve good.

Melbourne and "Germany" aren't exactly appropriate comparisons to Perth though are they?

Then they are idiots basing a major life decision partly on a stereotype. I would say the steroetypes of Perth would have little bearing if any on most players decision on whether to come or not (unless their name is Travis Cloke).
