Unashamed fan of Goldsack, but am I correct in assuming the recent good form of Maxwell is placing his long-term career at risk?

We all know what he does well. But what's he gotta do to be the player we think he'll be. Does he need to "re-invent" himself?

I think that Maxwell's recent form is actually more to do with role then anything else. He isn't and shouldn't be used as a Key position defender. Although last year without Presti he was played as a key defender.

For Goldsack to become a solid contributer in the AFL there is only one path I can see. The best possible outcome would for him to become a key defender. This would require a pretty large improvment in his accountability and his size. He'll need to be able to stand toe to toe with key fowards and get good body position.

I know at time he looks good weaving out of traffic off the half back flank but I think he is to poor in too many areas to be of value in that role. As a half back flanker he is very J Cloke and we all know that just doesn't work.

He's perhaps being affected by personal issues which is a shame. Clokasaurus has the same issue but obviously has big credit in the bank.

Timing can be everything, but you can't dictate the circumstances confronting you sometimes. I too am a sack optimist.

What personal issues?

Yeah, i keep seeing reference to personal issues with him but I have no idea what they are. I suppose that's why they are personal though!

I hope that whatever it is that he gets through it ok.

I really dont know whether Collingwood are doing the right thing with Goldsack.

I see him as having a future in AFL football if we move him up the ground, to the wing or even half forward, yet we seem to be trying to make him into a key defender, as that's where he has been playing most of his VFL football.

It was a little unfair to bring him in against WCE, expect him to perform as a forward after playing a defensive role all year.

We should start playing him on the ball or at least half forward/wing in the VFL and see how he develops, I just don't see him being a key defender at AFL level.

he copped a big knock in the Brisbane game at the gabba last year may have been round 3 or 4 and hasn't been the same since.

Not true, he was poor before that match as he had no pre season

broke his nose sat out a few, also hurt his knee so his fitness was shot. Played some VFL games and then game in during our charge to the finals and didnt get as many touches but was as hard as ever and tackling as well.

he has never been awesome defensively unless he plays micky O every week, he'll get his hard edge back and his confidence to run

He'll be back .... he's still young. He's in the top 3 for tackling technique (IMO). In no order - Maxy, Daisy, Goldsack. Not a bad kick, can read the play, willing to take it on .... just poor form for whatever reason. The WC game in the forward line was a great idea by MM for defensive pressure but Goldy just didn't come to play and looked slow and got pinged a few times.

He'll be right. :thumbsu:

He would be in most teams top 22.
A genuine worker, great tackler and has decent pace. He will eventually slot in our 22.

Very Similar to Harry O in style and attributes, Goldy is good in traffic and has great evasive skills, not a bad kick and good overhead.
However he gets lost inside 50 and is always in 2 minds when to go and when to cover.
Harry O was exactly the same 2 years ago and although still leaks a few his positive influence on a game far outweighs his negatives.
Tyson must find that consistency and instinctive nous in his makeup if he is going to be a positive influence in games.

I'm pretty sure MM or one of the assistant coaches said the Sack struggled with osteitis pubitis in 2008. Yet I dont recall it being reported through the 2008 season.

In 2009 he face planted into the turf against Essendon in the NAB and was knocked out. He's had far too many concussions over the years. Goldsack lovers relish the memory of his out of the box debut season.

His options seem limited. Be a key backman but ATM he's too slight to outbody the stronger forwards.

He cant throw himself into the threshing machine of footballers legs like he did in 2007 and not get punch drunk so he needs to whack on some muscle between now and next season (if he's still around ) and absorb Presti's skillsets while he's still around and become the Glove Mark 2.

The thing is, our backline is starting to become very settled and look quite solid.

Maxwell Presti O'brien
Clarke Brown Heath

Players such as Goldy, Reid, Cox, are hopefully gonna be able to do somethin to fit in. I can see the following occuring:
1. Presti retiring
2. Clarke & Heath getting more time in the midfield

ATM, the backline is lookin good in my opinion.

I love the kid. He's a hunting dog. Even if he fills out, I don't see him as a KPP, he's a runner who goes best with a defensive job to do.

Play him on a HBF, Wing or HFF and turn him loose, but at the same time get him to put on some muscle, just for protection.
