Mine's well over $20,000. Don't think I'll ever earn enough to even start paying it off.

You earn less than $32k then? That's the threshold is it not?

You have to start paying back at $54,869 for the current financial year. I'm only casual at work, and wouldn't even earn $20,000 in a year.

Discovered last night that my hecs debt is close to $38k. That'll be fun.

Ouch. Yeah mine was 16K. Paid most of it just before my tax return this year, now just a couple more grand to go.

All the advice I can offer is get it done sooner, rather than later.

Also sucks for you the 5% bonus is ending this year.

Yeah then I wouldn't bother then. I was getting close to the threshold (went over it this year by $50 can you believe it with interest earned ) so thought may as well pay off the ****er.

Got Inheritance so I paid it off as quick as I could.

Oh thats cool. (not that someone died tho). But still good. Do you mind saying how much??

The most $$ I've ever inherited is a thousand dollars from my grandmother. I think otherwise the bulk of money/property goes to their sons/daughters, ie. my mum/dad.

It was unexpected. Shit situation that cost us our family...squabbles over wills etc

Ah yeah I think that happened with my mate (Grandma had died). Was property tho a house in Kew. The smart thing would have been to hold on to the house a bit longer, but morons in the family wanted to sell fast and get the fast $$$.

God we had exactly the same problem! A place in Preston and a House near the Uni in bundoora. I wanted to hold and sell our other rentals and pay them out but they wanted money fast. Those places went up like 800k combined and the rentals have dropped in price. ****ers
